Reichardt "At one time I consid ered becoming a veterinari an." says Brian Matthews, who plays Eric Garrison on "The Young and The Restless." "I went to St. Olaf Col lege in Northfield, Minneso ta, where I took pre-med courses. I had no intention of becoming an actor, although I had been doing a lot of singing," remem bers Matthews, who was a member of St. Olafs famed choral society From Minnesota. Matthews went to Boston where he attended the New England Conservatory, and finally to the Juilliard School in New York City where he studied voice and opera "Beginning at St. Olafs, I drew more and more toward a singing career and less and less toward medicine." he says. "By the end of my junior year, however, I already had all the credits for my biology major, but I decided to go for a career in music instead." Matthews' first profes sional role was in the musi cal "Pippin " He also appeared in musical come dies and dinner theater productions, but capped his New York career by landing the lead role in the short-lived Broadway musi cal "Copperfield " , "Being in Copperfield' was a satisfying experi ence My opening night on Brian Matthews Broadway was very excit ing. If the reviews hadn't come out that night con demning the show, every thing would have been perfect," muses Matthews, who remembers that there were "almost no other roles to be had at that time. I wanted to yell. 'What's wrong with this business?" But his downbeat Broad way experience was soon offset when he landed his role on "Y & R " SHORT TAKES: -- The big news from the West Coast is that Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Doug and Julie Williams) have not renewed contracts with "Days of Our Lives " The couple met on the show and were married in real life as well as on television. "It was traumatic for us to leave daytime TV," they announced "Playing Doug and Julie has been a thrill ing double life. The artistic satisfaction has been tremendous, but now it's time for us to move on "
