Patricia Barber, 2916 Wooded Lane, McHenry, was charged with possession of cannabis, two counts of possession of a con­ trolled substance and possession of a counterfeit controlled substance following an accident in the 2600 block of Regner Road on April 17. FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 3, 1934) A graduating class of about 52 seniors, the largest class to graduate in the history of the McHenry high school, will finish on commencement night June 1. May 1 was smallpox vacin- nation day in the schools of McHenry. At this time a total of 50 children were vaccinated by our local doctors. TWICE TOLD TALES Edited from our files of years gone by Crops are being menaced by the continued drought which is breaking all records for this vicinity. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 4, 1944) One day recently 1 Leo Diedrich, who now resides on a farm west of Crystal Lake, saw some small foxes moving around a hole in the farm yard. He summoned three friends from here, John Phillip and Leonard Thennes, who drove to the farm to aid in the capture. In the fox hole they discovered nine foxes...about six weeks old. So excited were the men that they neglected to dig deeper to find the old fox. The foxes have been given to various residents who have built cages for the animals. Their food consists mainly of raw chicken. Two Navy boys, sons of Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Rix, Sr. of Johnsburg, are among the fine looking service men from this community who have in the past few weeks joined Uncle Sam's large aggegation now fighting in distant places. Alfred W. Rix, signalman 2-C, enlisted and started his boot training at Great Lakes, 111. on Sept. 7,1942. Reginald Rix, seaman 3-C, entered service in May, 1943, and, like his brother received his boot training at Great Lakes. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 30, 1999) Monday, May 4 will be a memorable day for the McHenry post office and for the city itself. On that day, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, the new, spacious office which handles the postal needs of 27,382 patrons will be dedicated in an impressive ceremony to be held on an improvised stage constructed in front of the office at 104 N. Green street. The program will open with a welcome by Postmaster Ray McGee, after which John E. Looze, dedication chairman, will act as master of ceremonies. At a meeting of the County Board the new assessed valuation for 1968 was reported as $341 million as compared with $211 million in 1954. Twenty- eight percent of buildings is in rural area and 72 percent in urban; 38 percent of value lies in the rural territory and 62 per­ cent, urban. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of April 24, 1974) "Operation Co-op" a simulated disaster drill which was staged to test the coor­ dination between all McHenry county's Emergency Medical Services, began at 12:10 p.m. Sunday, April 21, when Civil Defense headquarters in Woodstock notified McHenry Hospital, Memorial Hospital in Woodstock, and Harvard Hospital that a tornado had touched down at Greenwood school. Fifteen taverns throughout the county were checked for under-age drinkers Saturday night by teams of deputies from the McHenry County Sheriff's department. Two bartenders and two patrons were arrested. According to Detective Sgt. Jack Tyrell, the Sheriff's department will carry on these tavern checks in an effort to cut down on highway accidents caused by under-age drinkers. Two horses were hit by a car on Wilmot Road Thursday night about 11:30 p.m. Investigation revealed that nine horses owned by Richard Turax of Spring Grove had wandered out of a corral where they were housed on Richardson Road, three miles from the accident scene. It was discovered that someone had cut gate wires, allowing the horses to escape. SENIORS DANCE The Silver Manes, senior citizens club of the Woodstock Moose Lodge, will hold a dinner and dance on Saturday, May 12.
