general News Fireworks committee plans for July 4 festivities County tax bills sent out later than usual By Aifela Borden PUiadealer newsservice Governmental bodies in the county will probably have to wait a little longer this year for tax money because the county's tax bills will be later than usiud. County Treasurer Gary Verdung told the McHenry County Board that the bills, usually mailed out about May 1, will probably not be sent out until May 12. Taxes are payable within 30 days of billing, which means a June 12 due date. * Verdung explained that a delay in computer time and a change in printing the bills were the reasons for the late bills. McHenry County Clerk Rosemary Azzaro and Super visor of Assessments Randall Woioski both explained that their functions in preparation for tax bills were completed ahead of time. Although the county this year has sufficient funds to rebate to local taxing districts about $1.2 million it collected on interest from property taxes, such rebates in future years caused concern among board members. A recent state Supreme Court ruling ordered that interest earned on taxes collected for taxing districts be rebated to the local taxing bodies. Board Member Cal Skinner urged the board to approve a motion asking state legislators to excuse counties from payment of such interests. The board agreed to authorize the legislative committee to take the necessary action. "If the county has to pay out these interests, we will have to replace the money somehow. It will mean taxing people more without increasing services," said Ed Buss. He said the interest payments would amount to $300,000 to $400,000 a year, which will create a major cut in services to residents. In other business Tuesday, the county board: -Learned that it would be about two years before the completion of an airport feasibility and site study. -Commended the Rotary clubs of McHenry County for the donation of $10,000 for a boat to be used by McHenry County for water recovery dive teams. -Heard a presentation from Nancy Fike of the McHenry County Hisorical Society in observance of the 150th an niversary of the first non-Indian settlers of the county in 1834, before the county was surveyed. -Denied a zoning variation petition from Michael C. Savitzky, Dr. Frederick Hult, chairman of the fireworks committee, announces that the McHenry Area Chamber of will again sponsor a gigantic fireworks display at Petersei Park on July 4. Mike Bohne, president of the McHenry Jaycees, has an nounced that the Jaycees will again provide the majority of the manpower required to staff the independence Day celebration. Since the reinstitution of this event by the chamber four years ago, the McHenry Jaycees have each year donated their members' assistance as gate tenders and guides so that McHenry can have the traditional celebration on the birthday anniversary of our country. When fireworks were returned ^McHenry in 1981, the shared financial liability was com mitted by the major senior organizations: the Lions, Moose, Kiwanis, Rotary and Jaycees along with the chamber. Since 1982, the chamber relies on a conglomerate of citizens, in dustries, businesses, and those service organizations who believe that the annual July 4th spectacle is worthy of their donated dollars. The celebration belongs to everyone and needs everyones support to continue. The gate receipts at $3 per car cover less than one-half of the cost of the fireworks. The deficit is dependent on the generosity of the community. Donations can be forwarded to 1257 N. Green St., McHenry. Chairman Fred Hult states, "We are grateful to the Jaycees for their continued willingness Dr. Frederick Hult, McHenry Area Chamber of their fireworks chairman, about the plans for the Commerce director and fireworks chairman, July 4 fireworks that will be held at Petersen muses with Mike Bohne, Jaycees president and Park. to service this event. This is a family event and it does mean sacrificing their presence with their families to enjoy the preliminaries or the fireworks itself. They are a very dedicated group of men who serve - McHenry with many special 3 projects." "We are pleased that they include the fireworks in their annual list of programs. We invite any interested individuals and-or organizations to join us in . the planning, promoting,j staffing and underwriting of this J event by calling, 385-4300.
