Nippersink Blvd. Fox Lake, Illinois 60020 (312) J587-2141 By Kurt Begalka Plaindealer news service Amid the grease paint, baby powder, hand mirrors and smiles, she spoke of the "soul of clowning." Jackie Mansholt, education coordinator for the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County, conducted a clowning workshop for the Woodstock High School chapter of Operation Snowball recently. Mansholt has been donning the makeup and garb of ChaChee the Clown for about 4% years. Tim Schoepke, WHS counselor and Snowball adviser, invited Mansholt in an effort to teach students how to use clowning to communicate to their peers. Snowball, a national organization, is dedicated to finding positive alternatives to drug and alcohol abuse. "It is a good way to reach anyone," Mansholt said. "I thought it was great," Schoepke said. "What I like is what kids are able to do in the clown role. Some of their in securities are released. They can be whatever person they want to be. I think it helps to build their self-confidence. It helps them to grow and know themselves a little bit more." Mansholt gave students some tips on clowning: -A white face makes your teeth look yellow. -As a general rule, when drawing on a smile, do not ex tend it above your upper lip. The one exception is if you have a large space between your lips and nose. -A larger smile makes defining emotion through ex pressions more difficult. -Use talcum powder to "set" the face and keep the paint from smudging. -Wrap Scotch tape around the grease sticks to keep them from "sweating" onto your hand. "It (clowning) gives people a chance to not only hear something, but experience it," Mansholt said. "It gives you freedom. It teaches you to be childish." Clowning is a state of mind, she said. Mansholt acknowledged that she's per- formed with the flu, a cold and when she's been dead tired. "Hie minute I put on the makeup, its gone," Mansholt said. "It's real weird, but it happens." About a dozen students struggled over their makeup- red, green, blue; hobos with blackened cheeks and sad eyes. They performed skits com municating the dangers of alcohol, as Mansholt critiqued their performances. "Remember to feel what you're trying to say," Mansholt said. "Respond „to your audience...exaggerate a lot. "You are now clowns," she added. "You are no longer yourself."
