Warrior softball team splits Fox Valley pair Plaindealer news service CRYSTAL LAKE - A tank of oxygen might be a good addition to the Crystal Lake softball bench. For the second time in a week the Tigers rallied late to beat Fox Valley Conference rival McHenry. Host Central scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 9-8 win Wednesday. "My heart may not take it next time," Tiger coach Doug fclundy siSff His ticker, though, is beating a first-place beat. Central is the lone unbeaten FVC team at 3-0. "It's a tough conference this year and there's a long way to go. I'm not worried about places yet," Blundy said. Warrior coach Pat Wirtz is worried. He watched his squad fall to 1-2 in the FVC. McHenrv defeated Dundee-Crown 17-5 Tuesday. "We really have our backs to the wall," said Wirtz. "We're going to have to beat the teams we have to beat." Hitting the ball and scoring runs hasn't been a problem for the Warriors. A total of nine hitters on the Warrior squad are hitting over .300. McHenry led 5-0 and 7-2 before the Tigers' gears began meshing. "I'm really proud of the way .the girls didn't give up," , Blundy said. "It would have * pe£n %asy 'fcr let up'and say* we've lost this one, but they didn't." After McHenry regained the lead, 8-7, in the top of the seventh, the Tigers again went to work. McHenry botched a force play at second, putting runners at first and second for pinch-hitW Lisa Williams. She tried to sacrifice the runner over, but her bunt went for a hit to fill the bases. Kelly Mathews followed with a squeeze attempt. Her bunt started foul, but rolled into fair territory before stopping on the third-base line. Amy Erickson scampered home for an 8-8 tie. In an interesting strategic move, McHenry coach Pat Wirtz moved right-fielder Val Kilday to second base with hard-hitting Jean Barry coming up. "We didn't hit the ball to right all day. He figured a fly ball would score the run anyway,' Blundy said. \ n , ogiilrSlll) "Hie switch seemed to work when Barry popped to Kilday. But the Warrior fell down after the catch, and Blundy sent Judy Barry for home. She beat the throw to improve Central's overall record to 8-1-1. The Warriors belted 14 hits in the losing cause, with five of them going for extra base hits. Cindy Gaines slugged one that hit the fence and bounced over for a ground-rule double. She had two doubles for the day. Patty Johnson and Monique Betancourt had three hits each, while Renee Mezzano singled, doubled, tripled and stole two bases. Sara Prust hit two-for-two and scored three runs. Prust was the losing pitcher. Gaines did clear the fence against Crown-Dundee Tuesday. Her hosnerun was the first s»nt did h i law on clearing homer for a girl ever at the Dundee-Crown field. Andee Norton helped out with three hits, two for doubles. She also knocked in three runs. Greta Larsen and Mezzano also added three hits. Prust was the winning pitchr, giving up only eight hits and three walks, while striking out four. Johnsburg drops two in track double dual The Johnsburg Skyhawk boys' track team lost a pair of Nor thwest Suburban Conference matches in a double dual meet with Lake Zurich and Marengo Wednesday. v - The two losses left Johnsburg with a 2-2 NWSC record. SOFTBALL used by her teammates and the words (ball, strike, single, double) to express the dif ferent mechanics of the game. • "The words used are words I never heard before. At the beginning I had no idea what they were continued from page 24 talking about," said Aasegg. The words and the game will be something she will always remember, but she doubts she will ever play the game again back in Norway. "I think it's nice and I enjoy it. But with homework and practices everyday, that's a lot to handle. It's been more of a relaxing- year for me. "They (Nor wegians) are not into sports like here. There's more pressure to get into sports here." Back in Norway, her dad knows what - s : o f t b a l l a n d baseball is, but Aasegg has had to explain the game to her mother. Aasegg knows she may never become a real good softball player. But she just played the game "for the fun of it." 3400 N. RICHMOND RD.
