PAOIL TMtfVlfeHes Gilford's no quack By Katy Koontz Jack Gilford has been making audiences laugh since his days in vaudeville. He's been a hit on stage ("The Sunshine Boys," "Cabaret" and "No, No, Nanette") and in film/("A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forumr), and he's also made forays into television ("Ond^Upon a Matress" and "Friends and Lovers"). t "I woOHd -have left show business, but I didn't know' where the exit was." says the man viewers might remem ber best as the adult with child-like expressions on old Cracker Jack commercials. And Gilford's at it again -- this time as an old animator he describes as "sweet, funny, touching and almost naive" on "The Duck Factory." a new prime-time comedy series premiering April 12 on NBC. y^~>-s^eople ask me if it's a children's show, because I r guess"the name sounds as though it could be, but it's not It's an adult show about a tacky, cheap animation firm trying to stay in business. It's comedy that you can hear and see and relate to," he explains. \ Yet Gilford laments, "The quality of television isn't too good generally. TV is a risky business. Even if you have a very good show it's hard to stay on top. We are living in an age where the networks compete for violence and excite ment, and it's just getting more violent." Shows that are more moving than mauling often don't get ^enough audience attention to survive, yet Gilford believes "there's still a market for that kind of thing." Why is Gilford still acting even though he's old enough to retire and enjoy his past successes? "I do it because it feels good," he says. "If you "find anything better than being wanted, then you call and let me know."
