Appreciation certificates and flowers were given to volunteers during a special brunch inVThe Lambs Country Inn Restaurant, -94 and Rt. 176, Libertyville. "We are deeply grateful for the help of these men and women who take time out from their busy schedules to volun­ teer," said Virginia Denton, Volunteer Coordinator. "Many of our volunteers hold full-time jobs and will make the time to volunteer. We also appreciate all the hours given by the U.S. Navy volunteers and the many other individual groups who help at The Lambs special events and with special projects." Volunteers are needed for numerous jobs "at The Lambs including positions in the Vocational Work Center, as teachers' aides and in the Thrift Shop. Q. - I have been a housewife for more than 40 years and finally find some extra time on my hands. Are there any I volunteer programs to which a senior citizen can dedicate time? A. - Senior citizens throughout Illinois volunteer in hospitals, schools, nursing homes and other community agencies. Many of them become involved through one of these statewide volunteer programs: Foster Grandparents are low- income seniors age 60 and older who give their love and skills to abused, retarded, handicapped and other children with special needs. There are no educational requirements to be a Foster Grandparent, but volunteers must be in good health. Senior Companions provide service to seniors less fortunate than themselves, such as arranging transportation to a doctor's appointment or preparing meals. This assistance can prevent or delay the need for moving frail seniors out of their own homes and into an institutional setting. Just as important to many people, Companions also provide friendship. .Senior Companions usually serve 20 hours per week and divide their time among several clients. They must be 60 years or older with low incomes. J C Fwwey C*mH*y. im Retired Senior Volunteers give service on a part-time basis through non-profit private and p u b l i d c o m m u n i t y organizations. Their activities vary with individual skills and community needs -- from tutoring in the schools to financial counseling. Anyone 60 years or older can join the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). There are no income, experience, or educational restrictions. RSVP volunteers serve without pay but may be reimbursed for tran­ sportation and meals. Additional information about these programs is available from Lt. Governor Ryan's Senior Action Centers, 1-800-252- 6565. Q. -- I am a retired businessman with quite a bit of free time. Is there any way for me to use my business ex­ perience on a volunteer basis? A - More than 250 retired businessmen and women in Illinois provide free management counseling through the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). As the volunteer arm of the U.S. Small Business Administration, SCORE volunteers advise present and prospective business managers on corporate costs, production lines,' com­ puters, advertising, sales, in­ surance, taxes and other business-related concepts. SCORE counseling is con­ fidential and done ona person-to- person basis. Counselors also conduct pre-business workshops and problem clinics. < SCORE chapters are listed in the phone book under SCORE, U. S. Government, Small Business Administration. In­ formation is also available from local Chambers of Commerce and Lt. Governor Ryan's Senior Action Centers, 1-800-252-6565. Q.- How can I get more in­ formation about both the state programs which need volun­ teers and other volunteer op­ portunities in my community? A. - The Illinois Office of Voluntary Citizen Participation (I-OVCP) promotes and coor­ dinates volunteer activities across the state. It maintains a statewide resource centerCpn volunteer programs and cit participation, and coordinat its efforts with local voluntary action centers and other local volunteer programs. The qffice also arranges training workshops and undertakes special projects with public and private voluntary organizations. Contact the Illinois Office of Voluntary Citizen Participation, 160 North LaSalle, Room 2000, Lt. Governor Ryan and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) have published a guide encouraging senior citizens to seek apoint- ments to Illinois State boards and commissions. This publication, Illinois Boards and Commissions - Opportunities for Older Citizen Represen­ tation, lists the functions, composition, terms and contact person for those boards and commissions which make decisions affecting senior citizens. Copies of the guide are available in limited quantities without charge from Lt. Governor Ryan's Senior Action Center, 3 West Old Town Mall, Springfield 62701, and AARP, Consumer Affairs, 1909 K Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20049. Q. - ArC there any op­ portunities for senior citizens to volunteer for work in state government? A. - Lt. Governor Ryan's Senior Action Centers have senior citizen counselors who volunteer time each week to help Illinois' elderly residents with questions and-or problems abouy State programs and services. Well-acquainted with seniors' needs, the counselors serve as personal liaisons with both private and government agencies. They also share in­ formation, encouragement and understanding with the senior citizens who call, write and visit the Action centers in Chicago and Springfield. Several other state agencies and bureaus also have volunteer programs. These include the Department of Aging; Arts Council; Capital Development Board; Department of Children and Family Services; Central Management Services, Civil Service Commission; Com­ missioner of Banks and Trust Companies; Departments of Conservation and Corrections; Emergency Services and Disaster Agency; Bureau of Employment Secur i ty ; Depar tment of Energy and Natural Resources; Fire Marshal; Guardianship and Advocacy Commission; Law Enforcement Commission; Departments of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities, Public Aid, Public Health, Registration and Education, and Rehabilitation Services; State Scholarship Commission and the Veterans Home. Last year more than 31,000 people of all ages volunteered in these government programs. They performed a wide range of services including clerical support, entertainment and escort activities, transportation, field trips, tutoringf volun­ teering at senior centers and nutrition sites, occupational therapy. > ARE YOU NEW IN THE McHENRY AREA?
