As in the robbery foiled on Sept. 7, 1876, the citizens of Northfield helped to catch the suspect in the stickup at the First National Bank of Northfield. . >, "The townspeople thwarted the James Gang in 1876, but there was very helpful and critical citizen participation in the apprehension of this robber, also," said Nor­ thfield Police Chief Mancel Mit­ chell. The suspect, whose identity was withheld until formal charges are filed, walked into the bank just as it opened Monday. Fittingly, he was carrying a "Wyatt-Earp-type gun -- an old-fashioned six- shooter," Mitchell said. He pointed the six-shooter at a teller and demanded money, which the woman gave to him as a co-worker triggered a silent alarm and a third ran to alert bank President David Shumway. Shumway followed the man out the building and spotted the police chief walking to work. Shumway shouted: "Mancel! The guy in that car, he just pointed a gun at a teller!" Mitchell said he stopped the first car he saw -- the van of City Councilman Wayne Nelson -- and "gave him the classical direc­ tions: 'Follow that car!"' The chief and Nelson sped after the bandit on the snow-covered streets of the southern Minnesota town. After a 70-mph chase, the suspect's car slid out of control on a slushy curve and crashed in a ditch. * The uninjured man climbed out of the car and ran down the road, refusing to surrender, Mitchell said. "We had somewhat of a Mex­ ican standoff in the middle of Highway 3," he said. But the suspect gave up when two Northfield police squad cars bumped him, knocking him to the ground. Still unhurt, the suspect was taken to the Rice County jail. Authorities recovered an un­ disclosed amount of money. The most recent attempt ended more peacefully than the 1876 rob­ bery, in which three gang members and two Northfield citizens died. That robbery also netted no money for the outlaws, Mitchell said. The chief says the incident should be a warning to other would-be robbers. "We hope they get the hint -- the man had no sense of history."
