Aug 12 Gowdy becomes the eighth radio-TV man to receive the award, following Red Barber, Mel Allen, Bob Elson. Russ Hodges, Ernie Harwell. Vince Scul ly and Jack Brickhouse. The award was named for former baseball commissioner Ford Frick, who was a baseball announcer long before he was commis sioner. Gowdy is one of the sports' most versatile and respected announcers.
