SECTION 2- PAGE 10_ .update on m Schools • McHenry boys and girls will, be able to learn computer use this summer at the Institute for Educational Research (IER) Computer^ Camps, McHenry East High School, 1012 N. Green St., starting June 18. Designed to meet the needs of children learning to use the computer as an educational tool, the two-week camps will be conducted Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to : p.m. The "Basic" program has been designed^for 9-17 year olds, to develops thinking skills, and to make programming concepts understandable with hands-on experience at the computer. Students enter "Basic" at Pl.'AlNDEALEn-WEDNESDAY. MAY*. Four receive secretarial honors Four' local residents were recipients of honors awards at graduation ceremonies held recently at Robert Morris College, Carthage. ^ Secretarial certificates were \ given to students who began the program in September of 1963. Locfit students receiving such awards, were: Summer computer camps set for McHenry students / their current level of experience and progress as quickly as they are able. There are two stridents per computer in the < classes taught by IER-certified, full- time classroom teachers. The enrollment fee for the 60 hours of instruction for "Basic" is $225. Dates for the four two- week camp sessions are: June 18-29; July 9-20; July 23-Aug.3; Aug. 6-17. Students also have the opportunity to enter a drawing for a robot. This spring, local associations in almost every statr-wilL be joining with the National Education Association to promote Teacher Day , a day to help the public understand how important teachers are to every community. Mayor Joseph Stanek joined in the nationwide observance by declaring May 9 Teacher Day, USA, in the city of McHenry. Two win poster contest 1 McHenry grad honored at U of Florida fill MARTY KOLENO LOR I SMITH Rotary gives scholarships to t two McHenry students McHenry East Campus senior, Marty Koleno, and West Campus senior, Lori Smith, were recently awarded *$1,000 scholarships by the Rotary District 644 Vocational Scholarship Board. The scholarship award will help these students as they prepare for their careers. Rotary District 644 is made up of the communities throughout the metropolitan area north of Chicago. Marty and Lori were the only finalists from McHenry High School District 156 and were chosen from among 47 applicants. A 1963 graduate of McHenry Community High School has recently been named an out standing faculty member at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Donald E. Antonson, associate professor of dentistry at the university, was chosen by dental students in balloting conducted by the College of Dentistry Student Council. The Teacher of the Year Awards are presented an nually to faculty members deemed outstanding by their individual colleges and schools. The university has a faculty of 2,500. Antonson has been on the UF faculty since 1975. He received his DDS and predental education at Loyola University and was previously in private denial practice in FJprida and Illinois. He was a^ental officer in the U.S. Navyand established a dental clinic for un derprivileged children in Zion. Antonson's expertise is in preventative dentistry and peridontal-restorative iny terrelationships. * ' The UF, founded in 1853, has a student enrollment of 33,772. Two students from St. John the Baptist School in Johnsburg were 4 recently named semifinalists in the 1984 National Children's * Poster Contest, sponsored by the U.S. Department oft Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspection Service. Thomas Usrey and Jodi Giese's entries were among thousands in the "Summertime, Food and Fitness" poster contest. I Finalists and semi-finalists, representing the top one-tenth of one percent of entries from the nation's 72,000 schools, received food safety ribbons and special certificates of merit. Sandra Musielak, a McHenry jligh School East Campus student, has been named a 1984 United States National Award winner in cheerleading. The awards, made by the United States Achievement Academy, recognize the abilities of less than 10 percent of all students Sandra's biography will ap pear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Sandra is the daughter of Bernice and Donald Musielak of McHenry. Girls, Boys State members chosen Thomas Landers, principal of Marian Central Catholic High School, announces the names of the students chosen to par ticipate in the mini Girls and Boys State Program, sponsored by the Department of Illinois, American Legion Auxiliary.
