Jv> Over 20,000 children in state poisoned annually SECTION 2 - PAGE 13 - PLAIN DEALER - WEDNESDAY. MAY 9, 1984 general More than 20,000 Illinois children are accidently poisoned each year. The majority of these children are less than five years of age. Children are by nature curious, and they explore everywhere and everything they can reach. eepm' HEALTHY There are two types of ac cidental poisoning. One is the ingestion or contact with drugs ; with the leaves, berries or roots of toxic plants; or ">ith household chemicals. The other is vapor poisoning, such as carbon monoxide, usually from a car or unvented space heater. Today, I would like to talk about childhood fcxjisoning from both prescription and over-the- counter drugs. Any drug, if taken in excess, - may cause a toxic reaction. This is especially true of barbiturates and tranquilizers, iron tablets and antihistamines. The strength of medicines is most often based on adult dosages, and even a small quantity of an adult dose can poison a child. Just a week or two ago, it was announced that in 1973, prior to legislation that requires child- resistant packaging, ingestion of prescription drugs by children under five accounted for 4,180 hospital visits nationally. In 1981 -- eight years after passage of the Act - the number had dropped to 2,688. Child-resistant packaging isn't the whole answer, however. There are other causes of childhood drug poisoning, such as improper storage of drugs and ignorance of how to react Springtime frolic (rlaindealer photo by Anthony Oliver) '£L>it)y/»' dihiiUji)i ri-iiiiw ? isloJjill/ bni Member FSLIC IRENCO: M0 E Grant Highway.IIi/SM-mt : 4400 W Rauta IN. Accidental poisoning figures could be reduced eyen more if parents, grandparents and baby-sitters would follow a few safety rules. One reason drug poisoning is still occurring is that we don't recap drug bottles properly. Although we might recognize that the child- resistant closures are important and necessary, we sometimes get so provoked with trying to remove a safety cap that we to seal it after we've used the drug. Also, we are guilty of leaving drugs where a child can get to them. * Since child-resistant closures are not foolproof, it is essential that drugs be stored out of the reach of children. But, even that may not be enough, if you have a young climber in your home. A four-year-old can be very agile. Drugs should be kept in a locked cabinet, closet or box, but never in the bathroom where they are not only easily accessible to children but also where heat and moisture can rapidly change the chemistry of drugs nor in the kitchen with foodstuffs. I strongly recommend that you return medicines to the locked storage place after each use; even if you will be using them again soon. If you are called to the phone or to answer the door while you are taking medicine, take the container wjth you. Anyone who has been around children knows how quickly they can act. You can put a drug tainer down,]turn your back for &n instant, ani^a child can be off with it. Children sense that drugs are forbidding, and that makes them even more of a temptation. The chemicals in drugs change gradually over time. Some lose their potency; others may recombine and become more potent. Medicines that are past their expiration date or that have begun to change color or texture should be discarded. The best way to do that is to flush the medicine down the toilet; then rinse the container and put it in the trash. bm yci ICI ai News I 11. _ Set fishing clinic in Chemung McHenry County Con servation District and the Lee Wulff Chapter of Trout Unlimited will provide free instruction for youths and adults at a fishing clinic from 9 to noon, "May 19 at Becks Woods, in Chemung.
