Coe^-county superintendent of schools, presented the diplomas to the eighth grade graduates. In Bacon's Strip, Zeke Bacon reported that the lights will be used for the first time at the McHenry Soft Ball Park in a regularly advertised baseball game. "The admission is one thin dime and surely you wouldn't be among those few who will miss the introduction of night baseball to McHenry." TWICE TOLD TALES Edited from our files of years gone by B.F. Pfc. Wilbert E. Erber, 25, is now serving with the a^r corps at Municipal airport in Nashville, Tenn. Serving with the infantry in New Guinea is Corp. George Erber, Jr., 24, who "left for service on June 30, 1941. Aviation cadet Elmer E. Erber, 22, entered service in March, 1943, and is now stationed at the University of Chicago, where he will finish his training in meteorology this month. Since last November, Staff Sgt. Erven G. Erber, 21 has been stationed in England. Miss Lucia Rausch and her chorus and Paul Yanda and his band will^be featured in the United Nations concert June 2 at the community high school comdiiencement. Following several patriotic numbers, a patriotic pageant will be presented. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 14, 1959) The semi-monthly meeting of the McHenry Plan Commission was attended by representatives of Stanton and Rockwood, city - planning consultants approved by the City Council to work in developing information for a comprehensive area plan. Others present to join in the discussion were members of the county zoning board, Chairman Ernest Schroeder of Crystal Lake and Supervisor LeRoy Smith; newly elected Assistant Supervisor Walter Dean; Superintendent of Schools Carl Buckner, City Attorney John Loose and City Clerk Earl Walsh. A beautiful coronation con­ ducted by the Rev. Fr. John Reuland took place May 10 in the form of a colorful procession at St. Mary's Church for the purpose of paying homage to Mary the mother of God. A large crowd also assembled at St. Patrick's Church to witness the crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a special Mother's Day ceremony. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of May 10, 1974) It was all seriousness Tuesday night when bicyclists started off on signal in a race from McHenry to Lake Geneva with the diesel-powered commuter North Western train. Among the contestants was one young lady, Sue Johnson of McHenry, who was forced out of the com­ petition near the state line, at which point she was ahead of the train. Instead, aldermen agreed to wait "a reasonable length of time", probably until July 1, before making their decision. The Lakeland Park Property Owners association requested that the city wait on the purchase of the water company until the first pollution control hearing. For the first time, McHenry Community High School is of­ fering credit courses on a tuition-free basis in summer school, 1974. Among in­ novations, Principal D. William Dodds described a new Oucdoor Experience program, an ex­ panded summer swim program and a ' new tennis instruction program Nickel Day for Scouts (Plaindealer photo by Donna Bertulii) Area Girl Scout troops held a Nickel Day last weekend at Pearl Street Park, where different troops represented a country and sold, small handmade items for five and 10 cents. Pictured is Junior Troop 88 of Johnsburg which represented Japan and sold sweet and sour-dipped pineapple. Pete Mitchell enlists in Air Force Pete D. Mitchell, son of Michael and Sally Mitchell of Woodmar Court McHenry, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force's Delayed Enlistment Program recently. Upon successfully completing the Air Force's six weeks basic military training at he will receive training in the Mechanical Aptitude Area. He is attending McHenry West High School.
