Sometimes a diet change is the only treatment needed to control high blood pressure. For some hypertensives, this diet change becomes a regular part of treatment. It may also mean that they will need smaller drug dosages to control their blood pressure. However, if you are taking medication for high blood pressure, don't make the mistake of thinking that if you lower your salt intake, you can also decrease or stop taking medication altogether. Only a doctor can make that decision. Actually, it's not salt per se that affects high blood pressure. It is sodium, a chemical in the salt. Scientists do not know for sure how sodium affects high blood pressure, but they do know that in many people it con tributes to the disease. Most people eat far too much salt to provide their bodies with the small amount of sodium they need. Salt or sodium is present in many food items. For example: In snack foods, such as chips, crackers and salted nuts. In processed foods, like canned soups and vegetables, pickles, hot dogs, sausage; bacon, frozen foods, cheese and h&m. In restaurant foods, especially fast foods, like a hamburger and fries. In some medicines, like an tacids. A reasonable amount of sodium in the diet of the average person is two grams daily, which is equal to the amount of sodium found in one teaspoon of salt. Most Americans eat two to four times more sodium than they need by salting their foods and by eating foods high in sodium. There are several ways you can cut down on salt: Add less salt when cooking. Use less salt at the table. Choose alternatives to heavily salted foods like chips, pretzels and salted nuts. Try seasoning food with more spices and herbs instead of salt, seasoned salts, catsup or soy sauce. Choose alternatives to processed foods with high sodium content. These changes alone can significantly reduce sodium intake for most people. If you have high blood pressure, you may have to cut down even further. You should follow the treatment program your doctor has given you. Exercise and salt restriction are among the most important ways to treat high blood pressure.
