PAGE 22-PLAIN DEALER-WEDNESDAY, MAY 16, 1084 Sports * © McHenry splits DH with Gators That needed sweep to get back into the Fox Valley Conference race just didn't happen for the McHenry Warriors. The Warriors needed a sweep in a doubleheader with Crystal Lake South to jump in a three- way tie for third place. The Warriors did take the first game 10-4, but dropped the second game 6-5. The winning run was scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning. The split leaves the Warriors with 4-6 record and in fourth place in the FVC. The split allowed the Gators to jump into the third place tie slot, instead of the Warriors. "I'm happy to win a ballgame because I haven't beat South," said McHenry coach Brian Wilson. "A double win would have put us in the three-way tie for third, but there are some ballgames left and we still can get up there." Hitting wasn't a problem for the Warriors in the two games. The Warriors slugged out 16 hits during the first game, with 13 of them during the first five in nings. The Warriors scored in every inning 'except for the seventh in that game. Tim Pankiewicz and Steve Cunningham were the heavy hitters for the Warriors. Panfoewicz was four-for-five, with one rbi. The rbi was recorded on a second inning triple. Cunningham was a perfect three-for-three with two runs scored and one rbi. * Kris Teuber, Mike Podpora and Chris Vehring also helped out with big hits. Teuber slugged a triple in the fourth inning to Unock in two runs, Podpora 'doubled in a run in the fourth and Vehring doubled in two runs in the first inning. "We hit the ball well," added Wilson. He has very good reasons. His softball squad carried a 4- 5 overall record into the weekend, with most of the games played in either cool or cold weather. Thursday, the sun started shining for a change, and so did the Warrior's luck. The Lady Warriors put together a four-game winning streak starting with a 14-1 win over Jacobs Thursday. The; Warriors then ripped Crystal Lake South 13-2, and swept Cary-Grove in a doubleheader Saturday, 11-1 and 4-2. The victories raised McHenry's Fox Valley Con ference record to 7-3 and 8-5 overall. "Let the warm weather continue." said Wirtz. "It was a great overall team effort. The past four games we had superb pitching and superb defense. The hitting is coming through." The 4-2 win over Cary-Grove was the only contest in which the Warriors had to battle back from a deficit. The Warriors had to score three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Before those McHenry runs, it was a pitching duel in a 2-1 Trojan advantage. After Patty Johnson walked and Monique Betancourt singled, Greta Larsen hit a double to score Johnson to tie the contest, 2-2. Betancourt scored the lead run when Cindi Gaines hit a sacrifice fly to center. Larsen scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Gretchen Fuiava. The Warriors, however, had to turn to their defense to hold the Trojans to two runs in the contest. Catcher Andee Norton threw out a Trojan runner at tempting to steal second in the fourth inning, and she also caught a pop up which she turned into a double play in the fifth inning. In Saturday's first game, McHenry scored four runs in the fourth inning to expand a slim 2- 1 lead. The Warriors added four more runs in the fifth inning for a 11-1 win. Monique Betancourt led the Warrior hitting attack with two hits and a rbi. Thursday, the Warriors broke open a 1-1 game with four runs in the second. The Lady Warriors scored runs in every one of the six innings played in the contest. Again, Betancourt led the hitting attack. This time Betancourt added three hits, two going for doubles. She also added two rbi's. Val Kilday also slammed out two doubles, while Sarah Prust and Patty Johnson tripled. McHenry demonstrated the same kind of explosive offense in Friday's game. This time the Warriors scored all of their 13 runs before Crystal Lake South scored its two runs in the bottom of the fifth innieg. Patty Johnson's lead-off triple down the left-field line started out a three-run first inning. Betancourt followed with a double to score Johnson. Betancourt continued her offensive threat with three stolen bases on one hit and three rbi's. But this time Johnson carried the hot bat, slugging out three hits, scoring three runs and knocking in three runs. Cindi Gaines also added a triple. Creutz finished Young Warriors surprise FVC track field with third place WOODSTOCK - This spring's Fox Valley Con ference boys' track meet was supposed to be just a warm-up for the McHenry Warriors for the upcoming seasons. With a squad full of u n d e r c l a s s m e n , t h e Warriors were counted on banking for the future and let the more experienced teams finish ahead. But the Warriors weren't so obliging to its FVC rivals. On the stfbwigth of four seconds,/ tbje Warriors placed behind only Crystal Lake Central and Dundee- Crown in the race for the FVC title. Central brought home the title easily with 153 points, while the Chargers settled with second best and 113 points. The Warriors scored 75, just edging out Crystal Lake South's 71. Jacobs was fifth with 67, Woodstock scored -40 and Cary-Grove 39. "Basically, this was all we could ask from the kids," said McHenry coach Dan Boland. "We took the places we could. This is a good track conference and I'm happy with third." What made Boland even happier was to see sophomores and juniors come up with top places. Junior Mike Lobinsky and sophomore Jeff Szamlewski were two of those place finishers. Lobinsky managed to gather up a second in the discus and a third in the shot put. Only Crystal Lake Central's Jim Clark's 140-1 edged out Lobinsky's 139-7 in the discus. Lobinsky's shot put mark was 42-8. Szamlewski grabbed a second in the long jump with a jump of 19-5. Dave Zeman of Crystal Lake Central won the event with a 19-5Mi. Boland said he is happy both will be back next season. "We feel everything is falling into place and we're hoping next year we move up in the standings," add Boland. The other seconds came from track veterans. Chris Creutz was second in the 3,200 meter nin in 10:01. Jim Lane of Crystal Lake Central won the event in 9:55.7. The other second came from the 3,200 meter relay squad of Brian Wright, Marty Koleno, Doug Suchomski and Terry Harth. The Warrior squad was edged at the finish line by Crystal Lake Central. A third place came from the 400-yard relay team of Curt Justen, Keith Losch, Jim Shaver and Jeff Sazamlewski in 45.5. So it appeared the Warriors wouldn't be considered a legitimate contender for the FVC crown. But the McHenry squad did exactly what coach Gary Gray had planned on at the beginning of the season. He was looking for his young squad to hang on during the dual season the best it could and then put on good finish at the FVC title meet. The Warriors did that, as they tied for fourth place with Cary- Grove with 8.75 points. Crystal Lake South won the FVC title with 30, while Crystal Lake Central took second with 22.5 and Jacobs was third with 13.65. Dundee-Crown was sixth with 6.87 and Woodstock 4.
