Cliff Ward \ PAGE S- PLAINDEALER •!WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 1*84 House air time at issue One of the hottest debates in the House of Representatives these days doesn't seem to be over the MX missile, Reaganomics or high deficits, but over air time. Legislators from both parties have been uttering strong remarks about after-hours Republican dominance of the cameras in the televised House of Representatives sessions. The entire fragrant episode occurred when Republican legislators learned it was a lot easier to get on the air when they didn't have to be recognized by the Democratic house speaker, producer-imprenario Tip O'Neill. So these stalwart Republicans did the next best thing, they rolled the cameras when the session was over. These GOP reps got up in front of the cameras, which have always been trained only on the podium in the front of the chamber (not on Washington golf courses, the best place to find an Illinois rep, according to a recent study), and got in a few after-hours japes and gibes at the expense of the Democrats. The Democrats, not unexpectedly, had gone home after the last bang of the gavel. Everything about the plan seemed great until O'Neill ordered the camera to pan the House, which showed the Republican speakers addressing a room packed full of legislators who had come to conduct the nation's business disguised as empty chairs. O'Neill's sudden camera switch brought sharp comment from the Republicans. This was only natural. If someone had broadcast images of me forcefully proposing laws, diplomatically suggesting compromises and fearlessly haranguing the oppositin to a chamber busting at the seams with thin air I'd feel a little sheepish, too. Actually, I'd feel like an idiot, which is how the Republicans looked. So, the typical Washington reaction ensued. The Republicans said Tip was not at all a nice man, and O'Neill said the same of the Republicans. Episode over, right? Wrong. _ -Legislators are looking for jobs in network television and are seeking to boost their "star appeal" through frequent appearances on House television. With the tight reign on lobbying contributions and ABSCAM, many legislators feel they can make a better living in Hollywood than in Washington. And why not? With the garbage on the idiot box getting more unbearable all the time, let's give our lawmakers a chance. With that thought in mind, let's look at a possible network line up in the near future: At 7 p.m., Channel 5, "The D-Team." In 1972, the House Select Committee on Foreign Aid for Penguins was sen tenced to jail for accepting a bribe the lawmakers did not take. HieBe men promptly escaped from a minimum security facility in Virginia and now make their living as consultants-of-fortune in the Washington underground. If you need a favor, if no one else can get you the key vote, and if you can find them, maybe you should call the D-Team. Series stars John Candy as Thomas P. "Hannibal" O'Neill. At 7:30 p.m., Channel 7, "The Rodino Warrior." This science fiction opus features l|el Gibson as New Jersey Democratic Rep. Peter Rodino, who single-handedly tries to reapportion Newark after a nuclear war. In the first episode, Rodino faces a challenge when he must find a way to move 80,000 mutated conservatives who have moved into Giants Stadium from his own Congressional district. uAt 8 p.m., Channel 9, a made-for-TV-movie, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." The horrifying story of a liberal physician Dr. Clarence Jekyll, who runs a family planning clinic, and his alter ego, Mr. Henry Hyde, an archconservative who opposes federally-funded abortions for the poor. The horror occurs when the alter-ego is actually elected to Congress. Simplicity vs. Sears. Sftnpthilfy More. Check the chart. SfanpBdty gives you more.
