BIG SHOW -- ABC, probably trying to make up for airing the pseudo-Olympic '̂ Battle of the Network Stars." will outdo itself in its coverage of the genu ine XXIIIrd Olympiad from Los Angeles. The network will present an industry-shattering 1B7 hours of action, almost all of it live, during the July 27 to Aug. 13 run of the games. To make sure everyone knows about the biggest sports event of the year, the network plans a two-hour prime-time preview on July 27 as well. ABC's output will not only be nearly two and a half times its coverage of the 1976 games In Mont real. but it's also more air time than the last three summer Olympics combined. In an effort to satisfy the expected worldwide audience of two and half billion, the network will employ a staff of 2.500 as it televises events in 22 widely spread locations around Los Angeles. The job is so big that the network has divided its broadcast center into two parts. One will produce the domestic signal from one point in Hollywood, and the 2.000 foreign correspondents covering the event will pick up ABC's signal from another point in the movie capital. One of the features of ABC's Olympic coverage that has proven to be a big hit is its "Up Close and Personal," which provides profiles of athletes that give a different dimension to the competitors.
