PAGE 20 - PLAIN DEALER - WEt>\ VNU VY, JUNE 1,1964 Sports Skyhawks place three on NWSC all-conference baseball squad There's no real big secret why the <37 Johnsburg Skyhawks finished with another winning season under coach Jim Meyers. Jeff Jayko, Jim Bentz and Joe Majercik are three main reasons. The three were honored by Northwest Suburban coaches last week as all-conference selections. The conference honor was Bentz's second. Marian Central had two players making the squad. First baseman Jeff Kruse and pit- cher-outfielder Tom Will were chosen from the Hurricane lineup. The three senior Skyhawks finished their careers by setting new school records in several categories. Joe Majercik and Jim Bentz led in the offensive categories, while Jayko set pitching marks. Majercik led the team in conference hitting with a .375 batting average, collecting 18 hits. He led the team with 12 runs scored, while hitting two doubles, one triple and two homers. He also led the team in rbi's in the conference with 13. "Joe Majercik was a very steady ballplayer," said Meyers. "He led in runs scored for the last two years." Bentz gave the Skyhawks speed and power behind the plate, as well as steady defense at catcher. He batted .333 in the NWSC with 13 hits. He also walked 13 times and he stole nine bases. Behind the plate, he only committed th^ee errors for a .966 fielding average. "He was so steady behind the plate," said Meyers on Bentz. "For being a catcher, 14 stolen bases (both conference and non- conference) in 19 games is pretty good. He is improving every year and he could be a good college ballplayer. We're going to miss his offensive punch." Jayko's steadiness on the mound helped his cause for the NWSC honor. In five NWSC games, he pitched four complete games for a 3-1 record. In 31 innings, he only allowed 24 hits, and onlv five going for extra base hits. His 1.15 earned run average was tops on the team, and he struckout 27 and only walked 21. "He (Jayko) has collected 10 wins in two years. He was 10-6 last year. His earned run average in two years is 2.10." Meyers said. "The biggest thing about Jeff is that he is a com petitor on the mound. He kept the runners on base well. He didn't allow a homerun in the last two years." Wauconda led all-conference honors with five players on the : W Jeff Jayko list. Pitcher Ken Scott was an unanimous pick as well as most valuable player in the con ference. Sol Laurentis, Brad Freking, Norm Niemo and Bob Olson were the other four. Jim Bentz The rest of the squad includes Greg Baumgarten and Mark Ring from Grant; Mike Castino, Todd Parola and Maurrey Sage from Grayslake; Chris Antoszek and Mike Rizzo from Lake .Joe Majercik Zurich; Jim Richie from Marengo; Brian Horn, Jeff Keske and Bob O'Conner of Round Lake. Sage and O'Conner were unanimous picks. McHenry travelers set for first season What would happen if someone would round-up the top girl softball players in McHenry between the ages of 16 and 18- years-old and put them on one team? That's something Mary Ann Knaack and McHenry fast-pitch softball fans will find out this summer. Knaack, along with her assistant coach Pat Norton, have hand-picked the top 15 players in McHenry to play in the city's first traveling team entry in the Tri-County Traveling Association. The 11- team league ^consists of McHenry, Kane and Boone Counties. Knaack said picking the top 15 girls in McHenry wasn't an easy task, considering the number of talented girls to choose from. Both Knaack and Norton have been involved with the McHenry Pigtail league for several years. "I've known most of these girls since they started (at seven and eight-years old). When picked this team, attitude an personality raiuced as high as skill. These are my kind of kids. Winners all around," said Knaack "You will see some of the finest amateur girls softball in the three counties, and we can compete with anyone." Knaack's squad opens up its first season at Cary June 10. The McHenry squad's first home game will be June 14 against Richmond. All of the home games will be played at West Campus. The teams McHenry will not play against from the Tri- County Traveling Association are Elgin and Belvidere. Knaack plans for her squad to participate in three tour naments this summer. One of the tournaments will be at Marengo July 28-30. "My biggest challenge will be not who to start in a game, but who not to start. I could probably pick my lineup with a dart board. It sure is nice to know I have four or five starters ready to relieve when I need it," added Knaack. Most of her squad played on the McHenry High School varsity squad. Monique Betancourt, Gerri Haner, Patty Johnson, Val Kilday, Gretchen Fuiava, Cindy Gaines, Renee Mezzano, Andee Norton all played on the Warrior team. Marian Central softball standout, Nancy Walsh will also be joining the team. Missy Gray, Cindi Kinsala and Toni Fmnlla were on 1mt year's McHenry junior varsity squad that finished undefeated. u J Rounding out the team are lj pigtail graduates; Delia d Saunders and Debbie McFaul. According to Knaack, all the girls participated in the McHenry Pigtail program for the last eight to 10 years. All of them, said Knaack, were all- star selections from the pigtail league to play in tournaments in Woodstock and Hoffman Estates. Besides rounding up these 15 girls, rounding up funds and equipment were no easy tasks for Knaack either. "We had to buy everything. We had 12 merchants as spon sors," said Knaack. . Knaack added that she has rounded up two area umpires to Continued on pof* 19 •PI tail.
