The event has been enjoyed by thousands of spectators the past two years. "But there's no need to be just a spectator" states Bed Race chairman, Tim Althoff. "There's more fun to be had by being part of the action. Anyone dan do it. The only essential requirement is a little imagination." "The fun is in gathering together a team, selecting a theme, decorating the bed and the team members, and finally rushing the prized creation down an obstacle course designed to challenge dexterity and ingenuity of design." ^ Bed Race teams are made up of five members (one rider and four runners). Sponsors are recommended for each team, and all donations are tax deductible. All funds pledged to the beds go to the Muscular Dystrophy patients in this area. A $25 donation must ac company the entry form. The fee qualifies the bed and the team for entry into the "Best Dressed Bed" contest, which is a separate judging based on overall ap pearance, originality, design, workmanship, personnel and costuming, and audience response. There will also be a separate container for file most popular audience vote, based on the coins in the container. Following the judging of the "dressing" of the beds, the races will begin. In order to qualify for participation in the racing portion of the event, each team member must have, a minimum of $25 pledged to the bed. Hiere ^ill also be a trophy for the individual who has the most monies pledged. All checks should be made out to the M u s c u l a r D y s t r o p h y Association. What kind of beds qualify? Any wood or metal "twin" size bed with minimum outside dimensions of 76" long, 33" wide, and l9"high (before wheels are attached). It must have a spring or plywood sup port surface, and must have bead and foot boards the full width of the bed frame. No motorized equipment of any kind can be mounted on the bed during the racing. All sharp edges and corners must be filed smooth or be protected. Any sort of wheels can be attached to the bed, but there must be four wheels. The MDA has 17 beds to lend to the first 17 teams that request them. All subsequent teams must provide their own beds. A bed can be reserved at the time that an entry form and $25 fee are submitted to the chamber office. That check too should be made out to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Because this year's race will be held at Petersen Park on the newly-paved parking lot, there will be a longer and more challenging course. Saturday, July 21, is the date for the races. Entry forms are available at file Chamber office, 1257 N. Green St., 385-4300. Complete information and instructions will be provided upon ac ceptance of the entry form.
