Family-centered Maternity Care describes ^•involvement the entire family intriCTfcthing experience. It is the goal of the medical and nursing staff at Memorial Hospital for McHenry County that the family unit learns and grows together from the experience. Family-centered Maternity Care en courages the nursing and r redical profes sions to prepare the family physically, emotionally, and intellectually for pregnancy, delivery, and parenting. "Hie family's involvement will first be y for new arrival encouraged beginning with a family maternity history at the physician's office. Prenatal classes in childbirth education, safety, and parenting are offered as the se cond trimester of pregnancy approaches. The sibling-grandparent visitation after delivery, as well as the Sibling Open House, serve to further acquaint the fami ly with the birthing experience. An alternative to the traditional birth and maternal-child bonding setting is the birthing room, which allows for a safe, homelike atmosphere for the birthing ex perience. Siblings (below right) have the joy of seeing their new brothers and sisters in the nursery. The remodeling provided two nursery units, each capable of caring for 12 newborna, complete with care for premature babies.
