Hospital employees hear seminar An organ transplant seminar was held at Memorial Hospital in Woodstock recently, by Linda Szeplak, R.N. from Loyola University Medical Center. The purpose of the seminar was to , familiarize and up-date hospital staff members on transplant procedures. When an organ or organs are donated at the hospital following the death of an individual, the hospital contacts Loyola University Medical Center which sends % team of physicians and nurses to remove the donated organs. The hospital's role id to maintain the body until the team arrives and to assist in the procedure so that the organ remains viable. A unique part of the seminar was that nurses and hospital staff were able to meet with and talk to an actual recipient of a' transplanted organ. The recipient was Michael Dowling, who at the age of 21 became the first heart transplant recipient in surgery performed at Loyola University in March. He talked of why the tran splant was* necessary, the procedure and recovery. He stated that he felt as good as he ever dftd and planned to return to work soon.
