A total of 20 McHenry youths participated. Catching it is one thing, but taking the fish off the hook is another. Sue Machnik had to help her three-year old son, Ryan, with the unhooking. Doherty, Steinsdorfer win derby Every fishing outing has its share of fish stories. The McHenry Park Department's fishing derby for area youths was no exception - just ask Pete Merkel. The Park director apparently caught a 21-inch bass weighing about three pounds. Although the catch was witnessed by his son P.J. and several others, the bass somehow got away. After landing the fish and measuring it, Merkel placed it in a fishing basket. However, before the end of the derby, the fish slipped out of the basket. While Merkel lost his big catch, several area youths were winners at the derby. A total of 20 youths between the ages of three and 13-years old par ticipated. Todd Doherty and Ron Steinsdorfer were the winning fishermen, each catching 35 fish. Scott Ensminger and Bart Whitney finished second, each catching 28 fish. Mike Christensen was third with 23 fish in his basket. The largest fish was caught by John Reiter, a northern. Christensen caught the next largest fish, a bluegill. Jeff Sch- mitt was third. Reiter also came up with the smallest fish of the day, a three- inch perch. Christensen's four- inch perch was second and Sch- mitt's four-and-three-quarters inch fish was third. The longest fish of the day went to Jeff Christensen with a 12-inch bass. Todd Doherty placed second with a nine-inch bullhead, while Jesse Whittany took third with an eight-and-half inch bullhead. Waiting for that first nibble wasn't easy for five-year-old Michael Harding, but later he caught his first fish of the morning. The fishing outing at Petersen Park gave Jesse expert fishing techniques. Sam Buenzli held the Whittany a chance to learn some of his grandpa's pole steady for his grandson. pi This Week Xoinj You Could win *3,500,000 MM Gordon Gin Major Peters Bloody Mary Mix Minor basektball Youths in sixth through eighth grades can attend the McHenry Park Depart ment's Minor Basketball program this summer.
