Wealthy Chicagoan purchases Stock farms FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 14, 1994) William R Skidmore, wealthy Chicagoan, who about eight months ago purchased the George Sayer farms No. 1 and No. 5, at Pistakee Bay, has just recently completed a tran saction in which he has become the owner of the Stock farms which adjoins the original property, lids farm of 222 acres includes the Pistakee Bay golf course which failed last year and which the Stock family had to take back. According to reports in the Chicago papers last fall, it was said that Mr. Skidmore paid $14,600 for the summer home which fronts on the Bay not far from his farm. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 11, 1950) Forty charter members were officially accepted in the local chapter of the National Honor Society at the McHenry high school last week. They were selected recently by a vote of the faculty on the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character and service. The McHenry Blackhawks, newly-formed pony graduate league, managed by "Pete" DeCicco, opened its season by defeating a good Glenview team, 13-8 at the city ball diamond. Star of the game was power-hitting centerfielder, Paul Morenz, who collected a triple and two tremendous home-runs, driving in four runs. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 12, 1974) Principals Gary Fields and Robert Swartzloff, of East and West schools, respectively, as well as other staff members gave the annual report for the two local high school campuses before the school board. Mary Ann Hauge, dean of girls, and Vera Peterson, dean boys at East, agreed that about 50 percent of the problem is smoking. Ms. Hauge referred especially to the rough language used in the school. Class cutting and truancy were also listed as problems. In enumerating .problems at West campus, Dean of Students Greg Johnson talked of class cutting and tardiness. The McHenry Stage band, once again under the direction of Bob Freund, will open its con cert season Thursday. Among to, be played are: of Three Dog Night," "The Candy Man," and an original composed and arranged by the band piano man, Vic Spencer, "Blue Moon" "Ticket to Ride" and "I Remember Basie." Guest speaker to talk on family history research "Genealogical Research in County Courthouses" will be the subject of a presentation to be given by Natalie Wolf, at the monthly meeting of the McHenry County Genealogical Society. The meeting will be held in its new location, the cafeteria of Central High School, Crystal Lake, located at 45 W. Franklin Ave. The meeting time is 7:30 p.m., Thursday, June 14. Visitors and new members are welcome. Bis. Wolf is a speaker with over 20 years of experience in the field of family history research. She is well informed on what to generally expect when doing research in a courthouse. The reprint of the 1885 History of McHenry County has been a successful project of the society. The MCGS Cemetery project continues to be one of the most challenging endeavors un dertaken by the group. It is not necessary to be a member of the society to help preserve the very important records, before weather or some other causes them to be lost forever, as in the case of many of the other early tombstones of the county.
