They were the only winners from the National Merit Scholarship competition in McHenry County and two of only 114 scholarship recipients in Illinois. Asfeld, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Asfeld, of Wood stock, plans to attend Mundelein College in Chicago. He is an honor student involved in numerous activities both at school and in the community. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Marian Central student council, the Junior Engineering and Technological Society (J.E.T.S.), math club and team, The Crown- Marian Central's school newspaper, volleyball, basketball, and numerous other school ac tivities. One particularly special group for Asfeld is "Project Hope" the Christian Service Organization at Marian Central. This organization provides services to people in the community such as the elderly and the needy. Asfeld wants to continue her education in Biology as a preparation for a career in Medicine. She has received a $20,000 scholarship from Mundelein College. Marian is also the recipient of Hie Ffllrs Scholarship Award. Belmonte, son of Mr. ahd Mrs. Leonard Belmonte, of Wood stock, plans to attend the University of Chicago where he was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Belmonte, too, is an honor student and involved in many activities such as the National Honor Society. He is treasurer of his class and has participated in music since he was very young. Belmonte also manages to tutor other students in need of scholastic help and bold down a part-time job. •Belmonte plans to study physics at the University of Chicago. Belmonte has an r unusual combination of interests stemming from both science and the humanities. School briefs Defenders offer scholarship CUM LAUDE GRAD Michael W. Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Miller, 4205 W. South Street, McHenry, received a bachelor of aits degree cum laude from Loras College Dubuque, la. He majored in Speech Com munications-Journalism . UWW GRADUATE Michael G. Ahlert graduated May 12 with a bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater. He majored in computer science. A 1979 graduate of Johnsburg High School, Ahlert is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Ahlert, 5321 Circle Drive, McHenry. MONMOUTH HONORS Brent Birkhoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Birkhoff, and Gary Selof, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Selof, have been named to the honor roll at Monmouth College, Monmouth, IL. Riverdale, McHenry, was one of 700 students to receive bachelor degrees at commencement ceremonies held May 20 at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN. Fenske received her B.A. degree in business administration from Carthage College. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art Fenske, of McHenry. ATTENDS REUNION Dr. John C. Goettschel, of McHenry, recently attended the 35th year reunion of his graduating class from the National College of Chiropractic. He was one of 1,000 doctors and guests to at tend the educational seminars and social events marking the 78th anniversary of the college. BETHEL GRAD David Thornton, son of Robert and Nena Thornton, 6604 W. Mason Hill Road, McHenry, received a Bachelor of Arts degree, Cum Laude, in speech communication from Bethel College on May 20. Over 410 B.A. and 13 A.S. degrees were conferred by President George D. Brushaber during commencement exer cises. The deadline for filing ap plications for the $750 en vironmental scholarship sponsored by the McHenry County Defenders is July 15. The Alta Rush Titus Scholarship was established in 1978 to encourage students to continue their education in an environmental field. The scholarship is open to college juniors, seniors or graduate students who are legal residents of McHenry County. Selection will be based on academic record, character, leadership, and variety of en vironmental interests. The scholarship is financed by revenue the Defenders receive from sponsoring recycling drives in the county. Applications for the scholarship may be obtained by writing to McHenry County Defenders, P.O. Box 603, Crystal Lake, or by calling 815-459-0450. Veteran's scholarship awarded to three Three students from McHenry County are recipients of a Children of Veteran Scholarship which provides a tuition waiver for four years at either campus of the University of Illinois. Preference is given to children of deceased or disabled veteran parents. Children of living parents are awarded on the basis of ACT scores. Four scholarships, one each to a child of a veteran of World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict, are available to qualifying students in each Illinois County. Recipients of awards beginning in fall semester 1964 include: Brian Nellis, McHenry, Child of Veteran, World War II; Mark Rigby, Woodstock, Child of Veteran, Korean Conflict; and Deborah Agate, Richmond, Child of Veteran, Vietnam Conflict. During the last months many activities have taken place at MJHS, including: magazine sales, model car contest, Sadie Hawkins dance, science exhibit, which had a great turnout. Many different and interesting projects were shown and there was a faculty versus 8th graders volleyball game in which the students won 2 out of 3 games. One exciting activity that took place was the talent show. Many students participated to show their talents. The variety of acts made the talent show very entertaining! All sports tournaments have been completed and the standings are as follows: Volleyball-3rd, Girls Basketball-4th, Boys Basketball-9th, and Track and Wrestling teams had individual winners. On May 25 we had an awards ceremony . which the top boy and girl athletes were noticed. They were Mike Boland and Denise Stasiak. The 6th grade students recently participated in a class picnic to Peterson Park. Hie gift to the school from the graduating class of '84 was a disc-drive for the 6th graders and ribbons for graduation. The 8th grade graduation was held on May 25th.
