Hie Lions have been providing the service for more than 20 years. Hie program, which is held in two locations, is known as Camp Lions. Hie northern site, located near Lake Villa, Camp Lions "Ravenswood", accomodates youngsters primarily from the northern area of the state. The other camp, Camp Lions "Touch of Nature", takes care of children from the Central and Southern parts of the state. Both locations are fully staffed to provide the traditional activities of swimming, boating,' hiking, sports and crafts. But there is one more ingredient: the camp is staffed by instructors who are trained to work with the blind and the deaf youngsters. The children, ages 8 to 16. onmp from aff ovpr state and from all backgrounds. At camp they will have the customary fun and recreation, but they will also get special training to help them grow in poise and self- confidence. "There is no reason that children who are blind or deaf cannot have as much fun as their sighted and hearing friends," said John Bock, of £9 Belleville, chairman of the Camp Lions coordinating committee, the group primarily responsible for the camp's operation. The Camp's two locations are similar in operation, but "Touch of Nature" is more adventure oriented while "Ravenswood" is more reliant on traditional camping activities-boating, hiking, etc. In • both camps children learn more about themselves and have a ball in the process," said Bock. Only children with vision or hearing impairments can at tend. For classification pur poses a vision impairment is defined in the range of between total blindness and 20-30 In both eyes after correction. #or those with hearing impairments, they are eligible if the impairment adversely affects their speech and language development and as a result requires a bearing aid or other communications. AH campers must,...be am bulatory and able tq perform self-help skills. A Qualified children can attend either camp. There is no charge for Camp Lions, which is funded from Candy Day proceeds, held statewide every year,. and through the generosity of in dividual Lions, Lions Clubs and others. , < Right now, applications for camp are being accepted for several sessions as , follows: "Ravenswood," July 22 to August 3. "Touch of Nature": July 8 to July 21 and. July 22 to August 4. 1 For information or to apply, contact the McHenry Lions Club or the Lions of Illinois Foun dation, 7321 W. Hie terns normally lay an average of three eggs in mid to late May. At Waukegan, they've chosen to nest on bare patches of ground between strands of sweet clover and thistle. Once hat ched, the young birds take flight three to four weeks later. In the meantime, security of the nesting colony is a problem- both for the terns and their human protectors. If an animal or human being gets too close to the nest site, the adults scramble in the air like a squadron of fighter planes and take turns swooping down on the intruder in an effort to drive him off. However, that maneuver has not always been successful, and the eggs hiave been susceptible to predators such as foxes and skunks. The Illinois Department of Conservation solved that problem by erecting an elec trified fence around the likely nesting sites. Power for the fence is donated by Edison, which has given wildlife biologists access to study the terns. The terns will reside until August, raising their young for their maiden flight to South America. MINES Illinois mines produced 5,650,789 tons of coal during April, according to Brad Evilsizer, director of Mines and Minerals. Perry County led in production with 1,223,656 tons.
