As a group, they are the easiest lawn weeds The (EXTENSION) People AAAml bicides and sound lawn management practices. Maintaining thick, vigorous, healthy turf is the best defense against broadleaf weed in festations. Healthy lawns do not give broadleaf weed seeds a chance to become established. Thus, following recommended cultural practices on your lawn, such as moderate fertilization; mowing at heights around two and one-half inches; infrequent, deep waterings; and preventing soil compaction will help prevent weed problems. When weeds show up on lawns, proper herbicide ap plication will kill them, but unless the cause of the problem is corrected, they will more than likely return soon. For exam ple, thin turf caused by low fertility or too low of mowing will continue to be plagued by weed? unless steps are taken to improve growth and thicken the turf to resist weeds. Likewise, when a severely compacted soil is sprayed for weeds, the area will remain bare until weeds fill in again,, as desirable lawn grasses will not grow on heavily- compacted soil. There are three broadleaf weed killer choices for applj to home lawns; 2,4-D, MC these, which improves control in many cases because certain broadleaf weeds may be highly resistant to one or two of the individual chemicals used alone. Dandelions, by far the biggest broadleaf weed problem in this area, can be effectively con trolled by any of the above herbicides. Products containing 2,4-D are the best choice for controlling broadleaf and buckhorn plantain, which are also common in area lawns. Chick weed, ground ivy (creeping Charlie), knotweed, henbit, and white clover will not be effectively controlled by 2,4- D alone, thus need to be sprayed with a product containing dicamba or MCPP, or both. Spraying when weeds are actively growing and very susceptible to herbicides is important for good control. (mecoprop), and dicamta Early June is an ideal time for iah spraying, as is fall (Banvel). Many comme products available contain a mixture of two or all three of Avoid the hot summer months, as her bicides may not work well and weeds are not highly suscep tible. Additionally, environmental conditions need to be right for good control. Adequate soil moisture is important. Do not mow before spraying or within the next few days after. Time applications so that rainfall will not occur within 48 hours. Members supplied everything from homemade butter, bread, cottage cheese and apple pie to fry cakes, baked beans and spiced tea for museum visitors to sample. applied via weed and fe fertilizer products; then lightly moistened foliage helps improve control. Finally, use caution when spraying broadleaf herbicides, as they can damage other landscape plantings if used incorrectly. Mix materials according to label directions and only spray under calm con ditions to help avoid drift. The amine or salt form of 2,4-D is much less likely to cause drif ting problems than the ester form. Also read label directions carefully before using any pesticide. U.P.1 A D.N.L.
