'Other Half entertaining, but it doesn't quite mesh By Kurt Besallta Kv v aim Knf*h pan't Wnte his nirkfd un dramatically Thp mpmhprs hustlin By Kurt Begalka Plaiodealer news service The public has always been intrigued by sizzling, personal tales of marital deceit. We want to know how the oilier half lives; even better, "How The Other Half Loves." Alan Ayckbourn's play "How The Other Half Loves," running through June 23 at the Wood stock Opera House, falls short of what it could be. Although en- RICHMOND ILLINOIS N.IM4M1 tt till Lumberjack show The Scheer's Lumberjack Show of Champions will be performing at Food Fiesta on July 22 this Fiesta Days. The show is a re- enactment of an old time logging competition which will include events such as logrolling, chopping, axe throwing, power and crosscut sawing and much, much more. The show features world champion lumberjacks performing in three to four shows throughout the day, with continuous entertainment on the Main Stage between the shows. Beach samples taken Water samples collected from swimming beaches by the McHenry County Department of Health on June 4 and 5, were obtained from several beaches on the Fox River and from some of the lakes in the county. Those beaches at which the water was found to be un satisfactory for swimming were: Emerald Lake Beach, Huntley and the VillqpF 'of" McCulllom Lake Beach. The department also recommends that persona refrain from swimming for two to three days following a heavy rain. Associations governing the following beaches did not choose to participate in the McHenry County Department of Health Sampling Program this year: Wonder Woods, Wonder Lake, Lakemoor Beach and Porten's Subdivision. Any questions regarding water quality at those beaches should be directed to the ap propriate association. > < ) l ( A N R h \ r A N AQI A SEN T HY W A T F R C O N D I T I O N E R •LOW MONTHLY RENTAL •NO INSTALLATION CHARGE •FREE WATER TEST •30 DAY FREE TRIAL tertaining, the script and the cast never quite mesh. The Illinois Stage Company, a new theater group consisting of staff and students from Nor thern Illinois University's Department of Theater Arts, put on a delightful performance overall. But there were oc casional lapses. The play deals with the dif ferent, yet surprisingly similar lives, of two couples: the Fosters and the Phillips. One man drinks, the other exercises. One woman sets the table in silver and cloth napkins, the other uses paper towels and flatware. Yet, when the audience tunes in, both husbands are complaining about breakfast. Bob Phillips, played by Tim Rezash, can't find his shoe. Frank Foster, portrayed by W. Alex Koch, can't locate his electric toothbrush. The first act drags. One day seems to last forever as Frank and Teresa Phillips, played by Jennifer Chada, try to discover the whereabouts of their spouses the night before. The audience is clued into an affair between Bob and Fiona Foster, played by Janet Fritts. The excuse is a meeting with an obscure worker at the office, a William Detweiler. William and Mary Detweiler (Marc Cohen and Janine Stroemer) remind one of Barney Fife and Thelma Lou. William is a warm hearted, skinny twit with thick glasses. His wife is sterotypical doting housewife. The tempo of the second act picked up dramatically. The cast seemed to lose its opening- night jitters and feel more comfortable in their roles. Koch, gives a great performance as the naive Frank Foster-heavy, good-natured, absent-minded and an incredibily inept han dyman. The cast should be applauded for how it deals with real life, everything from burnt toast to attempting to make small-talk with unwilling company. The set is outstanding, but can get crowded. The play features two separate apartments placed side by side, which drift in and out. Props are borrowed freely. It is' a unique idea that catches the audience's eye, but it can get. confusing with all six cast members bustling about on stage and the Detweilers swinging back and forth. The setting also is questionable. The English ac cents break down in spots, which could be remedied by setting the play in the United States. The location has no bearing on the plot. The characters also were a bit naive for this day and age. The audience would have felt more comfortable if it had been set in the 1950s, prior to the sexual revolution. Despite its faults "How The Otier Half Loves" is worth seeing. It will leave you smiling secure in the knowledge that the other half isn't all that different from you.
