Donation of life jackets sought for dam celebration PAGE S-PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JIINE IMIM Those attending the 55th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Wonder Lake Dsm vyill have an op portunity to see the community from the lake, and the dam from the shore. Three pontoon boats will tour the entire lake shore con tinuously both Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August 12, the days of the observance.. Hie boats will leave Wonder Center about every 20 minutes. Donations will be accepted by the boat owners to partially assist in the cost of operation. Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, according to Fred J. Fichtner of that organization, will be on hand at the dock and in the water to supervise and assist. In addition, the auxiliary will have a booth. Since the pontoon owners do not have enough live-saving equipment for the tours, they are currently seeking loans from area boat owners. Those wishing to loan life preservers should contact the chairman of the steering committee, Lorraine Murphy. Walking tours of the dam area will also be held continuously during the two-day "Birthday in the Country". The walks are to be sponsored by the Bible church, according to the Rev. Richard Wright, co-chairman for the event. Activities to interest all age groups are being planned, ac cording to Murphy. There will be food booths; a parade on Sunday, which will begin at Christ the King church; and the possibility of small carnival rides. Decorated bicycles, doll buggies, and tricycles will compete for prises at the two firebouses. The steering committee is made up of four divisions of responsibility and represen tatives from area businesses, clubs, and churches. MS volunteers are needed for annual camping trip As the Multiple Sclerosis Society's Hope Chest appeal and MS Education Month continue through Father's Day, June 17, MS Chapter Chairman John Stieffel is stressing the availability of varied services and programs for the 17,500 persons diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in northern Illinois. One of those is a therapeutic recreation program of regularly-scheduled activities designed to focus on an in dividual's strengths, rather than .on the limitations imposed by MS. The activities take place in YMCAs, bowling alleys and community centers and serve .the double purpose of acquainting MS clients with recreational opportunities in their own areas. Yoga, aquatics, crafts and outings are some of the activities offered. "None of these programs could take place without the help of hundreds of hard-working dedicated volunteers," Stiefel says. "A case in point is our annual five-day stay at camp in Wisconsin when 35 volunteers assist in creating a memorable experience for 70 campers.*' Hie camping period at Camp Wawbeek near the Wisconsin Dells will be held from Aug. 13 to 17.
