Hie matter of Jake Fieund's pasturing his cows within the corporate city limits was thoroughly discussed and property owner Wattles was ordered to take steps to have the cows removed from the property. Harry Morris, as principal, with John A. Bolger and John Karls as bondsmen, was granted a permit to handle bottled beer at the McHenry Country club house. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 8, 1944) News that Steve Harvey, 25, son of Steve Harvey of Lily Lake was "seriously injured in action on May 18 on Wakde Island" was received in a telegram from the war department on Saturday. Steve, a technician fifth grade, has been serving overseas for the past 27 months in Australia and New Guinea, and at the time of the accident on Wakde, a small island off New Guinea. Local residents since hearing of Steve's misfortune, recall radio broadcasts of a few weeks ago which told of allied troops en tering Wakde Island when it was thought that the Japs had evacuated. However, it was soon discovered that many snipers armed with machine guns still remained for there were casualties reported among our men. Two McHenry girls have this week completed their courses in nursing from Chicago hospitals and will now enter a field which daily is calling for more help to satisfy the needs on the war and home fronts. Miss Marie Nix, daughter of Mrs. Tillie Nix of this city and niece of Msgr. C.S. Nix, accepted her diploma June 5 in the auditorium of the nurse's home at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. Miss Pauline Bode, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bode, former Johnsburg residents, completed her training on June 7 from St. Frances Hospital School of Nursing in Evanston. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 11, 1959) Tragedy struck the village of McCullom Lake Sunday evening June 7, when Harry Berry, Jr. drowned while companions were frolicking in the water nearby. The young lad, who had just completed his freshman year in the McHenry high school, would have been 18 on July 7. By a vote of 14 to 9, the board of supervisors voted Tuesday against the proposed program of Sheriff Melvin Griebel to patrol the Fox River. In their vote, the board refused to appropriate any funds for police protection on the river. v One of McHenry's oldest businesses, operated by the Overton family to serve the driving public of the area,; marks its half century in operation this month. It was in 1909 that the late R.I. Overton began operation of the Riverside livery and horse-drawn bus nrvice, later moving to the west side of McHenry. The ambitious and far-sighted young man realized that the gas buggy was here to stay and made a com plete changeover. The horses gave way to the noisy, puffing, fire-belching autos which sur prised the quiet citizens of the city. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 15, 1974) At the McHenry County board meeting Executive Director Jack Hafner explained details of the summer program of C.E.T.A. which is the Com prehensive Employment Training Act. The summer portion of the program proposes to provide employment op portunities for disadvantaged youth in McHenry county, ages 14 to 22, through a work ex perience program. Funds available for fiscal year 1975 amount to $314,400 of which $293,850 is C.E.T.A. grant and $20,550 comes from Illinois Vocational Funds. * Baseball player Bob Dob- bertin received congratulations from Warrior Coach Ken Swanson upon being voted Most Valuable Player. Bob, a graduating senior at West Campus, caught 27 of the 28 ball games the Warriors played this season. He was also selected on the All Conference Squad. The McHenry Cheerleading Squad would like to invite all girls in grades 1 through 8 to the first annual Cheerleading Clinic. The clinic will take place on Monday, June 11, in the McHenry East Campus Main Gym. There will be a par ticipation fee for each girl.
