YURKO "Raiders of the Lost Ark- rewrote the book on action adventure films -- for non­ stop daredevil thrills and stunts. "Raiders'1 was unex­ celled. It was the kind of film one might expect from the partnership of reigning box-off­ ice champs George Lucas and Steven Spielberg A few other action tilms since have tried unsuccessfully to challenge "Raiders," most notably two recent James Bond films and the pleasant but tepid thriller "Romancing the Stone." Thus it is left to Messrs. Spielberg and Lucas to outdo themselves, and the result is "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" In Hollywood terms this film is a "prequel." meaning it is set before the first movie. A minor point as it turns out -- tor the accent here is not on history but on slam-bang excitement, and no one knows how to squeeze more excite­ ment from a situation than Spielberg and Lucas "Indiana Jones" is virtually (and at one point literally) a non-stop roller coaster ride of battles, clifthangers, calamities, narrow escapes, death-defying leaps and perilous plunges Like the first film. "Indiana Jones" is designed for sheer fun The story is much simpler than "Raiders." and in fact resembles "Conan, the Barbarian" more than another tale of Indiana Jones the anthropologist. Most of the action takes place at the sinis­ ter Temple of Doom, and somehow the lack of expanse becomes claustrophobic Eve­ ry great adventure story needs a great villain, and that is what is most lacking here. Yet even with those draw­ backs. "Indiana Jones" still has enough force to lift you out of your seat For sheer techni­ cal brilliance on a scene-by- scene basis. "Indiana Jones" may well out-perform "Raiders," but for overall impact of characters and story. "Raiders" is still the Hol­ lywood heavyweight champ of the world. ©1M4 Computes
