Dick. Peterson PAGE 3 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, JUNES, MM New cat incredibly aloof, but performs his job well Not only did we get a mutt puppy recently, we got a cat- Max the Cat. The mutt puppy wasn't a surprise; Max the Cat was a complete surprise. Max the Cat arrived unan nounced, the same day as the mutt puppy. Max is your typical cat-cold, aloof, unsociable, unaf- fectionate. Max the Cat, like all other cats, just barely tolerates humans. Cats think they are a superior being. I'd give Max the Cat a piece of my mind about that, but he would blink at me sleepily and look out the window or prowl to another corner. Cats are arrogant and they hate to be bored with the spoken drivel of humans. I know about cats. A few years ago, I had one. He was one of the most independent, unsociable creatures I have ever lived with-outside of Max the Cat, who is setting a new standard for disinterest of humans. My old cat hated strangers, and sometimes I don't think it liked me very m u c h . . . . . . I'd tell people about this cat I had, but they never saw it; the cat always hid when anyone came over. I'd explain the cat was a recluse, and I really did have one-somewhere. I even went so far as to tell people the cat was a writer, hard as that may have been to believe. When the cat eventually ran away, I told people it had found an agent, moved to New York and started a promising career in television writing situation comedy scripts for Aaron Spelling. My life was a little on the bizarre side then. I have recovered,, however. I hope I don't find out that my recovery was only a remission now that we have Max the Cat. Even though I dislike cats, I have been a major proponent of getting one. We've got mice and other small and not-so- small rodents living here without paying rent. Last year, I tried almost everything to eliminate the little suckers. I used mouse traps with modest success; I used DeCon, which helped the rodents grow big and strong in 12 ways; I tried a more toxic poisonjttiat wasn't very effective, either; I tried to ignore them, / It's very hard to ignore scamperings inside the wall behind your bed whenryou are trying to sleep. You always think one is going to jump on your face. It's hard to ignore critters that crawl from under the couch to watch television with you. It's even harder to ignore rats anywhere. I hate rats. You hear that, you dirty rats? I read a book that contained a passage about rodent ex termination. The guy would lay awake in his bed at night, waiting for the sound of rats scurrying across the floor. When he heard it, he would turn the light on and shoot them with a large caliber handgun, just like Dirty Harry. It worked, and it provided the man with a great deal of satisfaction. However, I don't like guns, and I can imagine what gunshot holes about the house would do to its resale value. So, we got a cat, It's the elusive better mousetrap. Max the Cat is a killer .Since we've had it, I haven't seen a single, live rodent in the house. I haven't even heard a wall scamper. Ihave seen some rodent organs outside. It's not a pretty sight, but it's the kind of proof I'm looking for. Max the Cat is OK. I'm sure the rodents are spreading the word among their friends that the house with the blue roof is a cat house. Rodents know enough to stay away from those dens of certain death. I may dislike the cat, but it pays its way, which is more than I can say for the affectionate mutt puppy. The way I look at it, hired assassins probably aren't endeared by their employers, either. Judges, associates appointed to free court caseload Chief Judge Jack Hoogasian has announced the appointment of presiding and assistant presiding judges to oversee caseload activities in the 19th Judicial Circuit. He also in stituted various committees to oversee various court-related activities. "The result of this", Hoogasian said, "will be to increase the efficient management of the increase in the number of cases filed in Lake and McHenry Counties. During a five-year period (1979- 1983), the number of cases filed in the circuit has risen from 157,752 to 179,276, a 21,524 in crease or approximately 13. f percent increase in judicial business. When added to the number of cases pending and reinstated, our judges average well over 7,000 cases each, and that is a large amount of activity to monitor," stated Hoogasian. The 19th Judicial Circuit has the second highest caseload in the State of Illinois, yet the circuit disposes of more cases annually than any other circuit including Cook County, the courts reported. The active participation of all the judges, circuits and associates, in their respective assignments wiU improve the 19th Judicial Cir cuit into a stronger circuit by forcing all circuit judges to be actively involved in the ad ministrative function of troubleshooting in the! assigned areas. r n aindealer McHenry Herald (USPS 335-200) Established 1875 3812 West Elm Street Phone 815-385-0170 McHenry, Illinois 60050 Published Every Wednesday & Friday at McHenry, Illinois Second Class Postage PAID at McHenry, Illinois by SHAW FREE PRESS NEWSPAPER GROUP POSTMASTER Send address changes to McHenry Plaindealer 3812 W.
