King says it helped him establish a rapport with co- star Joe Ryder, who plays Nick Ryder. And that, according to King, is the key to the show's success. "It's a theme that people enjoy. It's refreshing and pleasurable," King says. "But chemistry is really important. The characters on Riptide' are people we would all like to be. It's the relationship of the three characters which appeals to the audience " King is happy to be rec ognized as Cody and describes his role and Penny's as "two young Rockfords." Thorn Bray as "Boz" Bozinsky is the third member of the cast. King made the decision to be an actor when he was 12. He went to Yale Univer sity and perfected his act ing skills.' He was then awarded a scholarship to Julliard where he studied acting with John House man. His first professional role as a replacement for the lead in "Child's Play" led to his film debut in "Slaughterhou?e Five" and Parry King to his role opposite Shirley MacLaine in "The Posses sion of Joel Delaney." When King heard Ste phen Cannell was develop ing a new series, he wanted to find out more. "I was looking for a Stephen Can nell series," he says. And soon, after, growing a mustache, he had signed on as Cody. The Golden Globe nomi nee thrives on his charac ters' diversity. "I like going back and forth best," he says Even though he's content with acting for fiow. King admits he'd like to do some directing. Such drive and success has been in King's family for generations. King is proud of his long line of cel ebrated ancestors, which includes a signer of the Declaration of Independ ence, a prominent Civil War general and a distinguished literary editor.
