Drunk boating law passes in Lake County By Chris Juzwik Plaindealer news service Although a tough or dinance clamping down on drunken boat operators passed in Lake County laist week, officials in McHenry County don't anticipate the same hap pening here. The new law requires that boat operators suspected of being drunk submit to breath tests or lose their license for a year. *nie or dinance is similar to that which applies to operators of cars in Illinois. The Lake County Board passed the ordinance by a 21-2 vote. McHenry County Sheriff's Police Safety Education Officer George Corson said he wasn'i exactly sure of the merits of the ordinance. "I know there is a lot of drinking on boats," Corson said. "But I don't believe it's a problem. But I haven't been working the water, so I'm not sure." He added that if the McHenry County Board follows suit, there will be an additional problem of training officers on en forcing the boating policy on the Fox River. "It all depends on the county board," Corson said. "They must approve it." County board Chairman Clint Claypool said the board has not discussed the boating situation. "I know there is a problem," Claypool said. "But, we have not con templated it. Claypool said the new ordinance may not be necessary for McHenry County. "I think there are Enough existing ordinances to govern the drinking problem," he said. 25-50% OFF FASHION! I / MISSY PETITE WOMEN'S MATERNITY JUNIORS T-SHIRTS 25% OFF T-SHIRTS. Reg. 19.00-35.00. "The emphasis is on people," Claypool said. "Drownings are one thing, but accidents are another. People have to care." The Lake County or dinance is thought to be the first of its kind in the nation.
