Resident raises by Carol A. Steves Plaindealer newsservice At a recent neeting of the Board of Trntees of the Johnsburg Pnlic Library District, a resident of the district whose iands are on the outermost naches of the boundaries, acpressed the board regarding tfe possibility of being removm from the district. Mr. and ftp. William Cristy, who have li«d in their home for 57 years, lire on Wonder Lake Road nex/ to the Harrison School, which is in the McHenry School Diftrict. Mr. and Mrs. Cristy sajd their children have attended/Harrison School and McHenry High School and have always'J used the McHenry Library for research of school projects, as wefl as for leisure reading. Cristy stated that he has nothing against the John sburg Library, tout merely was surprised at teing included in the district, ince he has no reasons to be In the Johnsburg area on a regular basis. He said he felt no bitterness toward the lifrary and, in fact, feels that libraries are an im portant part < the community. He questione the board as to the reasoninj for including his farm in the bundaries. Randy Bjllinger, library director, stied that the in clusion of tlj land came about when the /library district boundaries feed to be changed before the acond referendum. However, he pointed out to Cristy that should he get a library card at the Johnsburg Library, that card would be good at any number of libraries that are also a member of the Northern Illinois Library System (NILS), including the McHenry Library. Cristy pointed out that his library tax would be ap proximately $170 per year, while he only pays $20 per year at the McHenry Library, but he added that the money is not the problem. In fact, he stated that he would gladly become a part of the McHenry Library District because he feels libraries are important. His main concern was that he considered John sburg "very much out of the way" for him and he saw no benefit in being included in the district. The board was sym pathetic to Cristy's feelings and agreed to further investigate the possibility of disconnecting his lands from the district. Cristy thanked the board for its consideration and stated, "Every school should have one (a library). Good luck in your endeavor." After Mr. and Mrs. Cristy left, the board voted to contact the district's lawyer to find out how to proceed in the case. They also indicated that they do not wish to set a precedence and decided that any resident of the John sburg School District would not be allowed to disconnect from the library district. They agreed that Cristy's case was unique because of his location. A report from the budget committee indicated that&the library will have a deficit by the end of the year and it will be necessary to obtain additional funds to meet the financial needs of the library until tax monies become available next July. The committee will be investigating the possibility of applying for state grants. Woodfield, YorktoWn , project end. A letter was received from the Illinois Library Association requesting that the library board contact legislators in the area to encourage them to pass House Bill 3025, which will allow the state to grant funds to libraries for the purpose of building new libraries. The board voted to write a letter to area legislators for that pur pose. Bellinger spent some time acquainting board members with the many ser vices that are offered by NILS, such as Droviding interHbrary loans, reference books, books, and consultants' which deal with many areas of con cern. It includes 48 to 49 public libraries, as well as many special libraries (i.e. school libraries) and all state university libraries. Its main purpose is to provide a resource to supply information where necessary. Currently, NILS is working on providing a computer link-up with all member libraries. Each library will need to bear the cost of the computer terminals, but what the cost will be is not known at this time. It will be several years before such a system is in complete working order, he said. "Hie board voted to hold its meetings on the first Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 3 in the library building at 7 p.m. All district residents are invited to attend and address any of their concerns to the board. Mnn., TUPS., WED..
