Four area students noted for academic achievement Area students get aid Area students were among 227 to be included in Carthage College honor and dean's lists compiled at the close of the spring 1984 term. Full-term students who have a cumulative grade-point average Of at least 3.4 (4.0 scale) based on 32 or more graded credits and who complete at least 16 credits during the previous 14-week term are placed on the Carthage Honor List. More than 1,800 students in the 63rd Representative District received financial assistance through the Illinois State Scholarship Commission (ISSC), according to Rep. Richard Klemm, R-Crystal Lake. Klemm said the assistance totaled more than $3.5 million for the 1983-84 school year. In the McHenry area, 176 students received an average grant of $1,297 under the Monetary Award Program (MAP). The total dusbursement was $228,436. The average grant was wily slightly higher in Crystal Lake, $1,309, where there were 233 recipients. The ISSC also administers the Guaranteed Loan Program (GLP), which was more widely used by McHenry students. In McHenry, 283 applicants received an average loan of $2,196, with total loans of $621,607 being given out. In addition, the commission awards certificates of merit to outstanding high school seniors through its Illinois State Scholars program. In the 63rd district, 154 students were named state scholars. "These figures demonstrate that the state is providing funds for the education of our young people," Klemm said. "Last year, lawmakers proposed an increase in the commission's budget and I was pleased to be able to vote for it." Dick Klemm, R- Crystal Lake, announced the recipients of his General Assembly Scholarships. To assist him in his selection and to assure fairness, Klemm established a scholarship committee to review all ap plications and recommend those they considered most qualified. Hiis committee was comprised of Bob Doran, counselor, School District 156, McHenry High School East Campus; Bob Blazier, superintendent, School District 47, Crystal Lake; Gail Dowdakin, foreign language teacher, Lundahl Junior High, School District 47, Crystal Lake; Dr. Darrell Dick, superin tendent, Unit School District 118, Wauconda; and Robert Jensen, member, board of education, School District 124, Fox Lake. One of the winners was Diane Cygan, a recent graduate of McHenry High School West Campus, who resides with her mother, Esther Childs. As a student at McHenry High School, Diane participated in student council, was a class officer, member of Natinal Honor Society, and member of Jazz, Concert and Marching Bands. A four year honor roll student, Diane's goal is to be a C.P.A. She will be majoring in accounting at Northern Illinois University. "I am delighted to be able to help further the goals of such a bright, dedicated young per son," Klemm said. "This winner represents a better future for us all." MCC trustee elected to treasurer of association David T. Murphy, a trustee of McHenry County College since 1977, has been elected treasurer of the Illinois Community College Trustees Association at the group's annual convention held recently in Springfield. The trustees association is a s t a t e w i d e f e d e r a t i o n representing all of Illinois public community colleges. Murphy has served as McHenry College's represen tative to the association since 1977. He has served as his board's chairman, the association's liaison with Illinois Board of Higher Education and 9 Capital Development Board, chairman of the nominating committee, and chairman of the North Suburban Region. He has also served as a member of the executive committee and finance com mittee and as a moderator and resource person for a number of seminars. As treasurer of the association, Murphy will serve on the group's executive com mittee and will be in a leadershp role for the entire community college system.
