The couple is equipped with a computerized satellite navigational system which can pinpoint the "Road Not Taken's" position within 300 feet on latitude and longitude Charts. A small digital navigational computer acts as a backup system, and the couple is trained in using a sextant for celestial navigation. The McGees are not newcomers to the water. Bonnie has been sailing since she was 13-years-old. She taught Gary the ropes on Crystal Lake. The couple's route includes travel through the Panama Canal to the Galapagos Islands which is not traveled by many people because of the Ecuadorean government's ecosystem on the primitive islands. Plans after the islands include the French Polynesia islands of Bora-Bora and Tahiti; Auckland or New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Greece and the Canary Islands before they return home. In a letter the couple wrote to The Herald, the couple gave a brief rundown on their ex periences in the last four months. The McGees left Clearwater, Fla. and sailed to Key West. From there they made landfalls at Cat Cay in the Bahamas, the Berry Islands and Andros Island before continuing to the Ixuma chain of islands. They spent a total of two months moving southeast through the Bahamas, snorkeling, trolling and relaxing on white sandy beaches. The couple then "weathered the notorious Windward Passage where you're squeezed between Cuba and Haiti," as Bonnie explained. After three days at sea, Bonnie and Gary arrived at Port Angonio, Jamaica. Bonnie explained in her letter, the highlights of the six-week stay included swim ming in the lush tropical beauty at Somerset Falls, the pleasure of a "Third World" reggae concert, and a three-day tour to the Blue Mountains where the couple hiked to the 7,402-foot summit. The highlights didn't stop there, Bonnie described one of the most intriguing events was in the San Bias Islands off the coast of Panama. Cuna Indian women decked out in colorful outfits with beaded anklets and gold hoops through their noses had arrived to sell us 'molas' -- elaborately stitched waistbands they attach to their blouses," Bonnie explained. "These Indians maintain their traditional culture, living in thatched huts on the 300 tiny islands of the San Bias and fish and lobster on the nearby coral reefs," she continued. The good times haven't dominated the trip though. Bonnie's mother, Mrs. Emily Marovich of Crystal Lake, said the couple has had their fair share of rough times too. "A real bad time was when they were in San Bias Islands and they ate a meal and drank water with the Indians. Bonnie got very sick from the unclean water and two days later when thev were sailing she had a 104 degree fever and thought she had dengue fever. The next day, Gary had the fever," Marovich explained. Hie McGees had a hard time sailing without the help of each other while they were sick and had quite a time pulling off their health when they went through the health inspection at the Colon entrance of Panama. Marovich explained the teaching couple has even had the opportunity to teach on the voyage. "Bonnie (a reading in structor) taught a child some English who was having problems and Gary (a math teacher) taught a kid who needed math help," Marovich said. Marovich noted Bonnie and Gary have one item that makes them very special with the in- dians-it's thpir photo album. "Bonnie and Gary showed the Indians all the photos Bonnie's sister Cindy and I put together before they left. One year I dressed up the family dog in pajamas for Halloween and now all the Indians think all dogs in the United States wear clothes," Marovich laughed.
