SECTION 1 - PAGE 14 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20,1984 Talent contest open McHenry Boy Scouts return from camp A talent contest with three divisions, based on age, will be a main feature of the 1984 McHenry County Fair. Bill Tammeus, who originated the talent contest as a fair feature in 1965, said this year's attraction featuring local talent will be held on Friday, August 3 at Hansen Pavilion on the fairgrounds at Woodstock. Prize money totaling $675 will be awarded contestants, and auditions pHl be held on Sunday, July 29 to determine the finalists from among entries. The entry form may be ob­ tained by writing Box 484, Woodstock, 111. 60098 or by going to the fair office weekday mornings. The age categories for the various classes are: junior to age 14; and adult, age 21 or over. Committee members who can supply further contest in­ formation include: W.H. Tammeus, general chairman, Kathy Thomas, secretary; Ken Kunzer, stage and sound; and Mary Jo Swantkowski, judges. Tragedy struck a McHenry home on June 18 when Joseph Schaefer, 59, a farmer living about two miles north of this city, died a few hours after being struck by lightning during a bad electrical storm about 6 p.m. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 18, 1959) Mary Frett and Hazel Ewell will be the first of several artists to demonstrate in the artist workshops of the Country Art Fair, which runs from June 19 through 21. The fair has become an annual event of the woman's auxiliary to McHenry hospital and is an outstanding cultural event of the summer in the entire lake area. Almost 100 McHenry county artists are now scheduled to exhibit. On Thursday, July 1, the Ringwood and Greenwood charges of the Methodist church will be officially separated with each church having its own minister. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 19, 197*) Miss McHenry of 1974 is Donna Humann, who will reign as Marine Festival Queen during the week of July 7-14. Donna received her crown from last year's queen, Nancy Staley, before a standing room only crowd at the American Legion home last Thursday night. Miss Humann, 19, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Humann of Lakeland Park. The Senate has approved a budget for the coming year for the waterways division of the state Department of Tran­ sportation that includes nearly $1.2 million for projects in the 33rd Legislative district. The largest project, announced by State Senator Jack Schaffer, Cary, is $1 million for dredging of the Fox River in Lake and McHenry counties from the Kane county line to the Wisconsin border.
