A real nice letter comes fran Frank Flaga, secretary. with a copy of the Pistakee Yacht Club's 19M yearbook. The book is dedicated to John Looze, who did so much far yachting both here and in Wisconsin. The Yacht dub puts out a humdinger of a book each year. Somebody does a lot of work and gives a lot of thought to the publication. Hie Pistakee Yacht Chi) is an outstanding organization in our community. It was organized before the turn of the century when there weren't many In dians gliding over Piptakee Bay in canoes. The next school bell vbrfn't be heard for several weeks. In our day, it was the time when the boys got together for pickup or workup ball games. , Rules were made and changed as the game moved along. Plenty of arguments and no umpire to settle questions. A broken bat discarded by the big teams was sometimes nailed together, then wrapped with black tape. A dime store ball was soon warped out of shape. Getting hold of a ripped league ball was a real find. Again the black tape came into use. Boys went barefoot and had a good coating over their feet after walking on oiled street. Any game between the West Siders and the East Side "Overcrickers" was sure to wind up in a big pow wow. As many of you know, Boone Creek was the dividing line between East and West MpHenry. Wandering across the line was dangerous unless you had your gang with you. it tike today. No During World War One, ball games were played between the H1""*from each side of the (finding line. Large crowds turned out and the proceeds went to the American Red Crocs or some organization engaged in the war effort. SUDDEN THOUGHT: When pies came being, there was great secrecy in the advertising promotion. Windows in ice cream paiiors were covered with posters telling of the revealing of the big secret Nobody guessed it would be ice cream on a stick, covered with chocolate. They sold for twice the price of a nickel ice cream cone, bixt took the fancy of a boy who wanted to treat a girl with the latest. Bob Adams and I felt so sorry (oh, so sorry) for Herb Reihansperger last week as he tried to be a busload of fans to go to a Cub game. With all the proclaimed Cub fans around here, the best he could do was to get 15 to sign up. There were a few maybes which Bob described as those who want to wait three weeks to see where the team is in the standings. It was a nice try, but very discouraging. Met the ever-popular Ed Samen. He is on his feet and smiling as he battles his way to good health. Friday was "Joe Frett Day" and 172 golfers gathered at Chapel Hill Country Club to celebrate the annual event. In the evening, the group enjoyed a fine feast at the Joimsburg Community Club. A 4>ort program and awarding of prizes took place. Good fellowship and fond memories of the one and only Joe Frett marked the day. Not many people can leave this earth and be remembered as Joe Frett has. He was a friend to so many and so many were his mentis. Howie Freund came back to his old home town for the day. He is an old Tiger and one of the best baseball players who ever put on a pair of spikes in these parts. We talked briefly about the time when the Tigers won the state championship and could have covered a lot more ground if the dinner bell hadn't sounded. Responding to the invitation to attend the opening of Northern Illinois Medical Center, a tremendous crowd gathered at the site Sunday noon. A very large tent couldn't hold the larger crowd. It must have warmed the hearts of those who did so much to make the dream come true. Thanks to the thoughtfulness of "Chuck" and Marie Weingart, we had seats out of the hot sun. Many fine speakers graced the platform. It was a proud day for McHenry and several other communities in our area. The only moans came when Dr. Wilt was asked to break an 18 year old bottle of champagne over a rock. Christening is proper: But an 18 year old bottle!
