He came home this week. The youngster underwent three liver transplants, survived a heart attack and a bowel rupture within a four-week period from Nov. 10 to Dec. 14. IMS. A fourth transplant seemed unavoidable after a blood clot developed within a short time after the third operation. However, knowing that Venfie had surprised them many times before, doctors waited to see what effect the blood clot would have. It was negligible. Doctors at Children's Hospital, Pitt sburgh, now suspect the dot healed over and covered with scar tissue, thereby allowing the liver to function successfully. Neighborhood excitement grew in anticipation of Seaquist's return. A huge "welcome home" sign made by neighbors was hung on front of the Vernon Sequist, Sr. home, along with an array of streamers and balloons. When the Seaquist's arrived, the first to reach the car door was 7-yearold Krissy Seaquist. had been staying with friends while her father flew to Pittsburgh to drive her mother, Debbie, and brother home. Despite the hoopla, Vernie was content to ride his motorized mini-bike. He delighted well-wishers, reporters and television crews with his determination to ride up and down the driveway. Verner Seaquist, Sr., said he had been given the ultimate Father's Day present: The return of his wife and son from their eight-month ordeal. Vernie remained hospitalized until early June, when he was released as an outpatient and stayed with his mother at the Ronald McDonald House. His mother said that the doctors, are treating Vernie as a. successful transplant patient. He must be monitored weekly by means of blood tests and is scheuled to return to Pittsburgh in December for a thorough check-up. The bay also must take medication daily to keep his body from rejecting the transplanted organ. Vernie suffered from a ter minal liver disease, biliary atresia. The family was notified that he would need a transplant to survive. Family and friends geared themselves up for the inevitable, but it didn't make it any easier. e Debbie Seaquist said he amazed doctors with his determined fight for survival. He overcame insurmountable obstacles and provided the medical team, led * by Dr. Thomas Stand, with valuable information. Barbara Naylor, chairwoman of the 'Friends for Vernie" fund said the group has raised more than $30,300 to help defray medical expenses, which already total a $1 million. In surance will cover 60 to 80 percent, according to Seaquist, Sr. Seaquist anticipates daily medication Vernie must take for the rest of his life, will average about $1,000 to $1,500 per month. "Friends of Vernie" plan to continue efforts to raise hinds. The organization conducted bake sales, craft shows and a Jaycee Junior bowling tour nament that raised $5,000. Train service interrupted due to track repairs The Northeast Illinois Railroad Corporation (NIRC) announced track work began June 18 and will continue for approximately three weeks on the Milwaukee District North Line to replace and upgrade 10 miles of rail between Grayslake and Fox Lake. During the construction period, mid-day train service will be interrupted from Fox Lake to Grayslake between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. The NIRC has arranged with WORTS Transit Company to bus train passengers during the service disruption. Passengers who normally board or detrain Fox Lake, Ingleside, Long Lake, Round LflM, ^ncr Grayslake will be bused to libertyville for Chicago-bound frains, and from Libertyville to their regular stations when traveling outbound from Chicago. Buses will leave from the stations at the train's regularly- scheduled departure time, but will be available for boarding five minutes beforehand. Busing will begin in the morning replacing the train that or dinarily leaves Fox Lake at 10:12 a.m. The first northbound train traveling through to Fox Lake in die evening will leave Union Station at 4:33 p.m. Because additional time is needed to bus riders to the stations, minor delays are an ticipated on the North Line throughout mid-day. Railroad crews will be replacing 112-pound jointed rail with 115-pound continuous welded rail, which will provide a smoother ride for commuters. Long-term maintenance costs will also decrease with in stallation of the new rail. The project, which is funded through the Regional Tran slation Authority's capital grant program, is expected to be completed in the middle of July. Hie construction work will not interrupt rush hour, late evening, weekend or holiday service.
