It is not known why one out of 10 drinkers develop problems associated with their drinking. They don't drink with the in­ tention of becoming alcoholic, and those who abuse other substances don't set out to become addicts. McHenry County residents can receive important ad­ ditional help in subkance abuse- related problems when Memorial Hospital opens its new Alcoholism-Substance Abuse unit on Monday, July 2. Robert Kajdan is the program director. He has hired a professkmaLstaff to help Memorial Hospital provide a comprehensive' treatment program in the community for adults. Kajdan, an experienced program director, and a multi- disciplinary staff of alcoholism- substance abuse treatment professionals, will headquarter in a remodeled area of the hospital on the fourth floor. Four beds will be designated! for medically-supervised detoxification, and 10 beds will be for inpatient treatment. Alcoholics and their families will both be involved in the program. Kajdan says much has been learned about treatment of alcoholism in recent years because alcoholism and drug abuse have lost some of the social stigma. "Noticeably absent is the 'alcoholics are bad people' at­ titude of earlier times, and recovery has become possible," said Kajdan. "Today, our society views alcoholism and substance abuse as treatable illnesses, especially in the early or middle stages of develop­ ment." * An effective mode for alcoholism treatment has been developed.
