Pairing the field by half, results in flight I showed Betty Mohan over Liz Nolan, Nell Fidler over Dot Freund and Virginia Turner over Carol Cooney on the 20th hole after two extra sudden deaths. Inflight n it was Evie Castle over Kathy Greer, Floss Miller over Barb Weber, Kathryn Bolger over Bernice Dolce and Linda Puccio over Sharon Pepping in Linda's best round ever. Flight m found Mary Mutchinsky over Kathy Vehring, Ethel Koehler over Betty Rode, Carole Bolger over Esther Jemiola and Jackie Victor over Toots Gerstad. In flight IV it was Betty Wayman over Lotte Koch, Melanie Frett over Lynn McKiernan on default, Dot Baker over Ardis Miller and Roni Cepulis over Marcy Wakitsch. With the field narrowed considerably and two weeks to go, the excitement rises in anticipation of the coming winners. In the meantime, a throw-out event is scheduled for next week for all those no longer participating in match play. Under the daily events, two mighty nice rounds of 88 each were shot by Carol Cooney and Alvina Yopp to have them share the honor of low gross over the field. In class A there was a three-way tie of 70 each for low net shot by Nell Fidler, Floss O'Connell and Judy Smithson. Low putts in the same class were 30, rolled in by Betty Mohan. In class B another three-way tie of 68 each was shared by Caroline Harger, Carol Barnicle and Sharon Pepping. Oops! Make that a four-way - Linda Puccio also netted a 68. Caroline low putted with 28. In class C it was Roni Cepulis with 66, followed by Carol Bolger with 68. Betty Rode and Jackie Victor each low-putted with 33. Class D Betty Wayman's 69 gave her low net with Peg Anderson in second with 71. Betty also low-putted with 31. Flying up to the birdie tree were Virginia Turner on six, Judy Smithson on five, Floss O'Connell on eight, Floss Miller and Nell Fidler on 16, Mary Mutchinsky on 15 and Dot Baker on 18. Barb Weber and Mabel Smith each had chip-ins as did Betty Wayman and Mary Mutchinsky on 15. Most of the day was a good one for the golfers until Pat Reed was seen swinging so hard she fell down on seven. At that point it became hilarious for her and her group. And, of course, when Mutchinsky went to the 14 tee sans club and sat on her iced tea, no tears were being shed. Meanwhile, back at the clubhouse, while the 18 holers were doing their thing on the course, the Nifty Niners were having their mid- season luncheon and whoop-de-do. Under the clever and expert guidance of Lori Qausden, a combined luncheon and floorshow entertained the 31 Nifties in attendance. Dancing their way to possible stardom were Loretta Coatar, Judy Babb, Gloria Sprague, Emily Rohner and Gen Hoelscher. As a finale, a special tribute in song was paid to Millie Simon whd has done so much in the entertainment field for the club memberg and elsewhere. Next week they'll get back to their respective golf games. 'Til then, Happy Golfing! Liz * . •. •,* 4 • « 11 ""w Chapel Hill ladies On June 19, the first Tuesday of the three week tournament, the winners in class A with net scores of 34 each were Carol Zimmer, Joan Popelka and Libby Johnson. Darlene Huemann got a nice chqHn on 13 Jane Lowery had the longest successful one putt her foursome said they had ever seen on three.
