:.^rrr--• Dick Peterson Rain, bites and sun are 'pleasures' of vacationtime Monday Dear Diary: Packed my bags this morning and thought, "This is it. I'm on vacation." I can't remember the last time I packed my suitcase - my big suitcase with the old bus transfer ticket on it. I only use the big bag for big trips. I'm ready for anything even though I'm planning to do nothing. This ought to do me for a week in the Northwoods, to a place where no telephone rings. • Being a novice at this sort of thing, I hope to act properly. I haven't been on a real vacation like this since I joined the Real World. AH I know is I am supposed to do nothing outside of eating and deeping, the necessities. I signed a sworn affidavit allowing the mailman to not deliver the mail, and I told the newspaper people not to deliver the newspaper. Details, details. That should fool the burglars. After leaving the cat with plenty of food, water and litter, I told it not to ruin the house. More details. Left three hours behind schedule. The car battery was dead. It needed more than a trickle charge, so I had to buy jumper cables. I knew last night that that would happen. I told myself I was being paranoid This is getting expensive already. When we got to the Northwoods, it was raining. Tuesday Dear Diary: This is the life. Read in the morning, sun and swim in the afternoon, a four-mile walk a little later, then more sun and swim. Might have overdone it. Ever since the mutt puppy fell off the end of the dock, it has been afraid of water. That's fine with me. I don't like wet dogs. Dave and Peggy and the boys came up tonight. We cooked on the grill, played cards and went for a midnight swim. It's not like it is on TV. The water is cold, as is the air at mid night. Pretty darn cold. I bought a newspaper. The world is still there. Wednesday Dear Diary: After the boys caught their first fish and had their pic tures taken, the family went home. The fish weren't big. I thought they would have made nice pets; so did the boys. . We were convinced otherwise, and the fish were thrown back in. I went fishing at this lake once. I did it right with a regulation rod and reel, lures, in a boat, in an inlet known only by mosquitos and biting flies. I may have done it right, but I didn't catch anything but the 24-hour itch. I never thought to fish from the dock. I'm not going fishing this week. I don't like to eat fish, anyway. Sounds sacrilegious for being in the Northwoods. I'll let someone else not catch them. ' u ' ' 7, ' i i ' '• r • " Did some more reading, sunning and swimming today. I must be doing something wrong. I don't have one of those deep tans. Maybe the sun isn't working. I don't know, and I don't care. I'm on vacation, you know. You don't worry about things like that when you're on vacation. Why does Elsa have a deep sunburn? Hmmmm. I'll comtemplate that before I go to sleep. Friday Dear Diary: It was cool and cloudy all day. Didn't go swimming and didn't get any sun. I've had an unusual preoccupation with weather all week. Is that normal? , Went to town and saw a newspaper. The world is still there. Didn't buy the paper, though. We're running out of money. Got to save something for McDonald's in Wausau tommorrow. We're going home tomorrow? That's it to a vacation? I need a few more days. I haven't discovered the true meaning of life. I haven't discovered why my skin is still pale. Saturday Dear Diary: It's all over. Town didn't get blown away, the house didn't burn down or get burglarized, the cat only made a minor mess. All those things were lurking in the back of my mind all week. Didn't get much farther than the back of my mind, though. I had to think about the weather, the sun and the mysteries of life. Took a shower after we got home. Didn't have one since Monday, but no one complained. Hiat was the extent of roughing it. Have just three dollars and some change left. Just made it by, just enough to buy gas for the lawnmower. Must be home. Vacation must be over. WE'RE EXPANDING OUR BODY SHOP!
