McHenry hangs on to nip Wonder Lake errors, and also several misplayed balls. I wanted to see Billy finish the ballgame, but I thought we better get Ross (Vehring) in there and take care of it." After Jim Kersten singled for Wonder Lake in that seventh inning, Cameron was able to strikeout Tim Fields. But a walk to Bill Grower and fielding error on Jeff Schuster's ground ball by third baseman Kris Teuber sent Kersten home for one run. Kevin Moore then tripled, scoring Grower and Schuster. After Cameron walked Bob Birdsell, Williams sent in Vehring. Vehring was able to force Dan Crook to ground out, but Moore scored for the fourth run. George Birdsell popped up to Teuber for the final out. Both Wonder Lake and McHenry jumped on the pit ching in the first inning. Cameron gave up three walks and a single in the top of the first inning to give Wonder Lake three runs. McHenry did even better, scoring six runs. Tim Pankiewicz reached on the error by third baseman Crook. Again, the McHenry bats gave /its starting pitcher a big lead, Spraying out 13 hits. Starting pitcher Bill Cameron was given ta 11-3 lead after three innings. By the time the seventh inning came around, Wonder Lake was in striking distance at 13-8. Wonder Lake scored four runs to come within one run of McHenry in the top of the seventh, before Ross Vehring came in relief to lave the win. ? "The guys were hitting the ball good," said McHenry coach Russ Williams. "If we only had jspme pitching. Billy (Cameron) did a good job. Against Cary Sunday, R w«4 back to old ways for the McHenry Travelers. Before Cary knew what happened, the Travelers scored 10 runs in the first inning on just five hits. The big hit was a grand slam hit by Betancourt. Johnson led off the inning with a single and Renee Mezzano walked to set up a two-run double by Delia Saunders. Gray's triple knocked in McFaul in the second inning, while singles by Kris Keevil and Johnson sent two more runs across the . plate. A pass ball allowed Fuiava to score in the fourth inning. Fuiava had singled. Continual on page 22 Life in the Tri-County has been so good to the McHenry Travelers during the first half of the schedule, manager Mary Ann Knaack has been looking ahead for competition. Hie Travelers have built a 6-1 record thus far, literally beating on opponents. Their only loss came to an opponent Knaack labeled as good competition for her squad. Her Travelers lost 10- 7 to Antioch in the second game of the doubleheader. McHenry had beaten Antioch 13-1 in the first game. "So far Antioch is the only team that has given us any competition," said Knaack. If that sounds like over- confidence, it really isn't con sidering how bad her squad has beaten their opponents. All of McHenry's games before the Antioch doubleheader were won by the 10-run rule after five innings. This past week was no different. Last week Tuesday, McHenry completed a sweep of Richmond, winning 20-5. After splitting with Antioch Saturday, McHenry stopped Cary 14-3. When Knaack talks about her squad, she says the scorebook tells it all. And it does. Against Richmond, her squad belted out 16 hits. McHenry scored eight of its runs in the first inning and stole 13 bases during the five innings played. Starting pitcher Monique Betancourt only gave up three hits and five walks to the Rich mond team. It was Betancourt's first pitching appearance for the Travelers. Betancourt also helped out offensively with a triple, while Renne Mezzano also hit a triple. Val Kilday hit a ground rule double. McHenry slowed down a bit against Antioch with only seven hits in the first game. But it was enough for 13 runs and the win. And when McHenry did hit the ball, it counted. Lead-off hitter Patty Johnson doubled twice, while Renne Mezzano tripled and Gretchen Fuiava also doubled. Card's pitching helped out by giving McHenry batters nine free rides to first b--o.-~--- --~- Starting pitcher Missy Gray only gave up four hits, while walking three. Knaack decided to give Betancourt another crack at pitching in the second game with Antioch. A slower pitcher than Gray, the Antioch batters caught up with Betancourt. Antioch jumped on Betancourt for seven runs in the first inning, with Gray coming in to get the third out. "She's a slower pitcher, but she was doing an excellent job," said Knaack on Betancourt. "They (Antioch) just hit everything she threw. So I had to bring Missy in to get the last out of the first inning." * Plaindealer photo by Mike Lamb McHenry Nautilus catcher Jim Colberg lost the the sacrifice fly ball hit by Jim Kersten.
