Edwards k Sons, Inc., a national brokerage firm with an office in Woodstock, is featured in the recently published "The 100 Best Companies to Work For in America." The St. Louis- based, 97-year-old investment firm employs about 4,000 people nationwide. A.G. Edwards k Sons, has an office with eight investment brokers in the Woodstock Ex change Building. Virgil Smith, vice-president of the firm, is manager of the company's Woodstock office. Using a five-point rating system, authors Robert Levering, Milton Moskowitz and Michael Katz evaluated major U.S. companies on the basis of pay, benefits, job security, advancement opportunity and ambience. A.G. Edwards scored four out of five points for pay, benefits and ambience. Hie firm scored three points for advancement opportunity and two points for job security. "It was splendid to be in cluded," said Benjamin F. Edwards, m, chairman and great-grandson of the firm's founder.. The authors noted that A.G. Edwards is a "homey" place where teamwork is emphasized. The book describes the company's endurance slow business cycles: ' of mass layoffs, Edwards put people on four-day weeks." In the mid-1970's, when the fhm began to lose money, Edwards asked employees to reduce costs by 10 percent. According to the authors, costs were chopped by , 17 percent and pilferage seemed to disappear. The company went into the black in two months. DENTAL SEMINAR Drs. C.J. Ludford and Kevin Wegrzyn, along with their staff from the McHenry, Harvard and Island Lake Dental Centers recently attended a dental seminar held at the Sheraton- O'Hare International Hotel. The purpose of the seminar was to instruct the dentists and staff so that they may create an ac celerated practice which would reflect their vision of dentistry. SAFETY AWARD John Appel, of Ringwood, has received the Northeast Illinois Railroad Corporation's em ployee safety award for May. Appel is a locomotive engineer for the Milwaukee district. Jeffrey J. Kenton recently joined the Reed-Prentice Division of Package Machinery Company as a Sales Engineer. Reed-Prentice Sales Manager William Jaeckel advised that Kenton is handling the full Reed TG line of injection molding machines and Duphmatic insert molding machines in Illinois and the southeastern part of Wisconsin. Kenton has considerable experience in processing machinery sales. Most recently he was National Sales Manager for the Pentaject Corporation and previously was Vice- President of Sales for the Rep Corporation. A graduate of Marion Central High School in Woodstock, Illinois, Kenton received his B.B.A. degree in Finance from the University of Notre Dame. He and his wife and two children reside in McHenry.
