We'll all be using that liquid soap in decorator pump bottles with little flower designs on them. In the past two years, liquid soap has begun to take over the bathroom sinks of America. At first they were just novelty items that I pooh-poohed with skepticism. Surely, the rich and famous trendsetters of ; weird California initiated pump soap for their petite bathrooms, I thought. One day an anthropological sort from the Midwest stumbled upon this find while doing primary research for "California Personal Hygiene Habits: An ! Overview of Soaps, Deodorants, Mouthwashes, Tooth- ; pastes, et al." He developed a set of likely reasons why anyone would ; want to put soap in a bottle and returned to the Heartland - with the news. Then he was on the morning talk-news shows ! and pump bottles were splashed across the covers of soap I journals and Better Homes and Gardens. Then they were in my bathroom one morning. They say that bottled hand soap is neater and cheaper than bar soap. And it comes in those pretty decorator • bottles that add just the right touch to any bathroom. Fiddle ! sticks, I say. (I've always wanted to say that.) Have you noticed how slimy those soap bottles get after a ; couple days of use, especially around the pump opening ; where the soap forms a crusty ring? The soap also dribbles > down the side of the bottle, putting a gooey film over the floraKdsetpi. That's fe» say nothing of the puddle of water the soap bottle eventually will sit in. <' . You actually have to wash fcff the soap bottle from time to j time. Isn't that ironic? Isn't that stupid? I've never had to wash-a bar of soap. * That's no neater than soap bars. And my hands never feel really clean when I use bottle soap. When your hands are j dirty, there's nothing better than a good bar of soap to press * between your palms to squeeze the dirt out. Liquid soap in a - bottle is slimy, and it grabs dirt with the same success that I'd grab a greased pig. Because the soap is in decorator bottles, it is hard to , distinguish it from other bathroom supplies that are , traditionally in bottles. One day I opened a new bottle of what I thought was soap, and I couldn't get my hands clean. , I couldn't even get bubbles. Later I found out I was using .. hand lotion. Silly me. I should have read the label. ! Every morning I catch myself going for the soap bottle I rather than the toothpaste tube when I brush my teeth. Some morning I know I will put a squirt of soap on my tooth­ brush, and I won't be very pleased. When that happens, I'll , contact my lawyer. I'll sue somebody. Liquid soap belongs in public restroom facilities, where no soap is available, as a rule. In public toilets, soap is in a - burglar-proof metal container bolted to the wall, and you use an electric hand dryer, also bolted to the wall. People ' are always stealing soap bars and paper towels, you know. Never mind that they say they are concerned about . ..sanitary conditions. You just can't trust anybody. There is good reason, I guess, for liquid soap in public restrooms, but not in private homes. No one is going to steal ; my bar of soap from the sink. • What about the mothers of America? Will children grow • up with potty mouths when bar soap is no longer available? I watched what I said when I was growing up for fear of * ultimate retribution - having my mouth washed out with a I bar of Ivory soap. She was a member of the PTA of school district 15; and a health committee which was formed by her and a local Girl Scout chapter. Surviving are her husband Henry Gass; a daughter, Mrs. Stephen (Nancy) Fisher-Fike of McHenry; a son Peter Michael (Mary Ann) Fisher of McHenry; two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Harry (Geraldine) Stratton of Palatine, 111. and a brother Jerome (Helen) Mc­ Mahon of Chicago. Her parents preceded her in death. No services were held at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, and interment was private. Loretta Deering- Loretta (Simon) Deering, 51, of McHenry, died Tuesday, July 3, 1984, in Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry. She was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Chicago. Mrs. Deering had been a resident of McHenry since 1954, previously of Chicago, and was employed many years for Dr. Wilt in both the McHenry and Crystal Lake offices; was an employee of McHenry hospital's central supply department; member of the former McHenry Area Rescue Squad; and a certified emergency medical technician, receiving honary membership for having over seven years of dedicated service to the McHenry area. Surviving are her husband Richard, whom she married July 17,1975, in Las Vega, Nev.; three daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Pat) Karmel of McHenry, Mrs. Gary (Kathy) Leonard of Harvard and Mary Jo Simon of McHenry; two grandchildren; and a brother Robert Eckstrom of Chicago. Visitation was from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home. A funeral blessing will be offered by Father John Holdren at 10 a.m. Friday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Johnsburg. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
