Church PAGE 7 • PLA1NDEALER - FKIftflYi f'tyf1*** The Way' not traditionally Christian, but not a cult, says member By Angela Burden Plaindealer news service Biblical research, teaching and fellowship is the purpose of The Way International, ac cording to an area resident who is a member. Though it is not a traditional Christian denomination, it isn't a cult as the group is often labeled, member John Puzzo says. Puzzo, a local businessman, says he is a follower of the controversial group because of his desire to learn more about God and the Bible. He is one of about 40 area families and in dividuals involved in The Way who tneet regularly. "My entire family has been involved in The Way for some years, and, after about four years of hearing them talking of their faith, I decided to join them and look into the Bible myself," Puzzo says. He says he > finds it "more logical to in- t terpret the Bible myself than to have someone else do it." Puzzo says he has developed "such a great love for the Bible" that now he has regular meetings in his home on the ministry "We have a lot of fun, no rituals, just the Word of God. "Christianity is a way of life ... not just a Sunday obligation," he says. The Way International is a non-denominational Christian ministry, often labeled as .* being a cult, founded in 1942 by Dr. Victor P. Wierwille. The Way's headquarters are located on about 300 acres in New Knoxville, Ohio. According to Puzzo, the ministry's structure resembles a tree. The five ministry properties in the United States are called "root" locations with the 40 countries involved being named "trunk" areas. Areas the size of states are called "limbs" with counties and larger cities being called "branches." "The local community fellowships are known as the 'TwigB,' " Puzzo says. The twig is an integral part of the ministry, according to Puzzo. Twigs are the small gatherings of members around the world who meet regularly for Bible studies and sharing of experiences based on the ap plication of Biblical keys and principles in each individual life. "Twig fellowships are designed to bring out the per sonal potential of each in dividual while inspiring and maintaining spiritual unity and purpose among the followers," Puzzo says. Technically, he says, followers of The Way are not members "because there is no membership as such. To be a follower requires only the desire to learn more about the Scrip tures and God." According to Puzzo, the Biblical research of The Way pioneered by Dr. Wierwille distinguishes itself from the research of other theologians today in that it rests upon the premise that the Word qg God is the Will of God. "The believes that God's message can be reclaimed fa the 20th century." Followers of The Way have chosen to start anew ip examining a wide range of ancient Arabic, Greek and Hebrew texts. Puzzo, raised as a Roman Catholic, studied and then taught Hebrew when he joined the Jewish faith. He says he enjoys his belief and better man for his studies and His Word. feds a so(God Save $8-526 Save S4-S9 Save S10 - S 1 2 Save S3-S22 Save S4-S13 Save S4-S5 33%-50% off Entire Stock of Summer Dresses for Misses, Juniors, Petltes and Women Sale 19.99-34.99, orig. $28-$70.
