He is ac companied by Salvation Jim, the renowned old prospector who visited in McHenry about a year ago when enroute to the World's Fair. Stories of the glorious north inspired Bender to see the gold camp at first hand. The Canadian newspaper speculated that Bender would invest in a Spruce Lake development where 16 claims have been staked and the prospects are said to be good for making a first class gold mine. McHenry pulled a surprise victory over Johnsburg last week under the lights when Harold Freund poked out a homer with one out and two down to give McHenry a 10-9 victory. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 17, 1974) The skill of a McHenry pilot in the face of mechanical malfunction was responsible few- saving his life and those of 11 passengers last Saturday. George Kropf, 37, of Lilymoor, sustained severe cuts above one eye and other lacerations on the face. Kropf, a commercial pilot and flight instructor at Gait airport, crashed on take-off at the Chicago Hammond airport. Witnesses were generous in their praise of the pilot's skill which kept the plane in the air long enough to avoid a brick farmhouse which reportedly had 14 occupants. Because of the low water - pressure in the city of McHenry, no sprinkling of lawns or gar dens will be permitted until further notice. McHenry is many things.
