Illinois recently enacted a substance abuse program devised to deal with the major problem of adolescent drug and alcohol fouse. The program, called S.T.O.P. Substance Abuse (Sports Teams Organized for Prevention of Substance Abuse), is a not-for- profit corporation, founded by Lt. Gov. George H. Ryan and representatives of the Chicago Bears. Other athletes from Chicago professional sports teams, such as the Cubs, White Sox, Sting, Black Hawks, Bulls and now- defunct Blitz are also par ticipating in the program. In a recent interview with Dr. Louis Sorto of Forest Hospital in Des Plaines, Ryan, along with Bear middle linebacker Mike Singletary and Bears' Director of Community Involvement Patrick McCaskey, outlined the new prevention effort, which sends sports team members into local schools to talk with youngsters about the dangers of drug abuse. McHENRY continued-from page 24 p.m. After a loss to Crystal Lake Monday, McHenry coach Russ Williams expressed concern about playing Algonquin. 4 4We always seem to hit a downer when we go there," Williams had said. But the coach proved to be only a mediocre fortune-teller. McHenry exploded for four runs in the first and never looked back, as ace hurler Pat Dunne copped the victory, with relief help from Steve Banazinski. Williams had correctly predicted one thing, though. "If Pat's on, they won't be able to touch him," he said Monday. All five Algonquin runs were charged to Dunne, and all were earned, but he did leave eight Algonquin batters on the basepaChe, a key to the game. IN THE McHENRY first, the winners batted around and tallied five times on just three hits. Three Algonquin miscues contributed to the McHenry outbreak. Singles by Mike Podpora, Bill Frisch and Dave Colberg did the damage. After Algonquin scored a run in the first, leaving the bases loaded, McHenry shortstop Steve Cunningham led off the visitor's second with a home run, upping his squad's lead to 6- 1. After two were out in the McHenry fifth, Bill Cameron singled, and moved to second as Colberg walked. Dunne doubled, scoring both runners, and McHenry had a comfortable 8-1 advantage. Algonquin retaliated with four in the fifth on seven hits, but Banazinski shut the league leaders down in the sixth and seventh to preserve the win. Every McHenry starter either had a hit or scored a run, Podpora leading the way with two singles and two stolen bases. Keith I are ready to pat « budget̂ "DURING THE school year, the athletes go into the schools and give the pitch and we (state officials) are there to bolster an on-going prevention program, or help them start a new one,'* Ryan said. "What's important, is to have guys like Mike Singletary walk in and get their attention. They don't make bubble gum cards for lieutenant governors, you know," he quipped. Can one visit by an athlete really influence kids? According to Singletary, it can make a difference. "One visit gives a kid a chance to think about it," said Singletary. "It's planting a seed. At some point in their lives, they come back to it: 'Oh yeah, I remember that.' But it can't just come from the players, it's got to happen at home also." RYAN CREDITED McCaskey and Bears coach Mike Ditka with being the impetus for S.T.O.P. Bears players already have visited 25 elementary and high schools to talk about problems associated with drug and alcohol abuse. Ryan, who is chairman of the National Lieutenant Governors' Substance Abuse Task Force, stressed the importance of educating youngsters about what he calls "the most serious problem" in the United States. "We send children to school to learn, we teach them everything to get through life," he said. "Yet we don't offer a program that tells them about the hazards of drugs and alcohol. It ought to be started at the fifth or sixth grade level where people start to know what it's all about. "If you think there aren't 10- and 12-year old alcoholics and addicts, there are," Ryan continued. "It doesn't do any good to put someone in Jail because they've had so many grams of marijuana; they'll generally come out worse than they went in. Education is the only answer." YOUNG PEOPLE aren't the only ones expected to benefit from S.T.O.P. Professional athletes suffer from an image blow every time there's a new revelation about drug or alcohol abuse in the sports world. "It (substance abuse) tainted the credibility of professional athletics," McCaskey, who advocates mandatory drug testing for players, said. S t̂Io.P. will initially be implemented in Chicagoland areas Judged to have severe problems. Future plans call for expansion throughout the state. Information about the problem can be obtained by writing to the Office of the lieutenant Governor, S.T.O.P. Substance Abuse, 932% W. Edwards, Springfield, 62704.
