Thompson hailed the dramatic decrease in Illinois' unemployment statistics as one of the most positive economic indicators seen in some time. "When our people go back to work, that is good news," the governor said. "And when the unemployment rate drops from 9.1 percent in the month of May to 8.2 percent in the Month of June, that is good news." "Although the 8.2 percent level is still too high in my opinion, the unemployment rate is headed in the right direction- Russell; Seaton promoted at Com Ed Kenneth W. The governor noted that the dramatic decrease occurred during the month of June, which is noted as the time of year when many graduates are job- hunting. "The ability of the market to absorb these job- hunters while at the same time registering a decrease in unemployment and an increase in employment is very significant," he said. The governor also said that the 11,360 initial unemployment claims that were filed during the week ending June 2 was the lowest number of claims filed for a week since 1979. At the same time, the initial unem ployment claims filed during June were fewer than during the same period last year. "Illinois has taken an aggressive course in the area of increasing job opportunities for working men and women in this state," the governor said. "We just completed one of the most successful sessions of the Illinois General Assembly in which many of their actions that I will sign into law will lead to the creation of new jobs." ownership of living can be a good investment for the future.
