In the local demolition derby, plan­ ted as the final night of entertainment [at the fairgrounds grandstand on Sun­ day, Aug. 5, daring drivers will battle to the finish to see who can destroy the [other cars. The last combatant mak­ ing contact is declared the winner. The Demolition Derby has also pro­ ved to be one of the fast-growing spec­ tacles at the McHenry County Fair and, because of its popularity, is limited to 35 drivers, both men and women. The derby will be comprised of in­ dividual heats and one feature, with cash prizes going to the winner of each heat and the championship going to the winner of the feature. Nationwide Demolition Derby Inc. runs the event at the fair and enforces strict rules for the entrants. Ken Thomas of Woodstock is one of the drivers who filed his entry forms at the county fair office. "I missed out last year because of the limited number of entries," he said. Thomas explained that the derby regulations require constant bumping of vehicles on the track. "We must make contact at least once every minute." --Thomas, 35, who was born and rais­ ed in Woodstock, is a partner with his father Walter in the Thomas Mobil service station.
