Show chairman John Crowden said events are scheduled to start at 8 a.m. with the posting of entries in seven halter classes, six performance classes and six speed classes lasting throughout the day until 8 p.m. The Junior Horse Show is set to start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, with horses entered in 29 classes. The show, sponsored by the McHenry County Saddle Club, is for those con­ testants 18 and under as of Jan. 1, 1984. There is also a 4-H Horse Show plan­ ned on Aug. 1 and 2. Classes include showmanship, horsemanship, equita­ tion (judging of the rider instead of the horse), gaming events and timed activities as well as novice classes for lighter competition. "There will probably be close to $4 million worth of tack and horseflesh on the fairgrounds over the course of two days. So it will be a big event," Crowden said of the Open Show. An average of 17 horses per class are expected* he said, giving spec­ tators plenty oft opportunity to see a broad range of competition. "Depen­ ding on what strikes your fancy, there should be plenty for everyone's tastes. Just wear comfortable clothing and a hat. It can sometimes get pretty hot in the grandstands," Crowden said. He recommended that anyone who has never seen a horse show might en­ joy the showmanship at halter class competition. "At halter" means without saddle or bridle and the horse is judged on how it is shown. "This is sort of the ballerina of the horse showing business. It's where most of the future trainers and breeders come from," Crowden said.
